Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

extract data from 1 field to multiple fields

my data is in a field like this:
    Item, color, size, style, etc.....
I would like to do like in Excel "Text to Columns" using the comma separating the data.
Is there an operation in Alpha that does this?
I would want to take from one table and add to another table.
    thanks

How about a couple of examples of typical data found in that field? Eg., how many words might comprise each category?

Re: extract data from 1 field to multiple fields

You should be able to use an append operation. Build the append as you normally would specifying master and transaction tables.

For the item field in the master table where you want to put the item value in the Item, color, size, style.... field make the append expression

      word(transactiontablefield,1,",")

for the color field in the master table

      word(transactiontablefield,2,",")

      etc.

For any numeric fields you will need to adjust the append expression to

      val(word(transactiontablefield,X,","))

where X is the position of the numeric field in the comma separated list.

There is the possibility that it might be simpler just to export your data to Excel, perform the text to columns, and import the result.

      There can be only one.

Re: extract data from 1 field to multiple fields

thanks, that is what I was looking for. I will see if I can make that work.

here is a sample of the data:

        Spinner, Red, #2, 1/16, #00 Indiana

that description is sort of a part list.

this is an Item list from Quickbooks into Alpha 5. I have always used comma's to separate different characteristics
I use A5 to print catalogs, labels, work in progress work orders, etc..
by separating these into fields, I can group these items by size, color, style, etc... which organizes my catalog better.
What I am doing with separating the data now is doing queries by certain things like, querry all that contain "Red", then using the update to add "Red"to the fields which is not too bad, just looking for a better way.
After doing this, I export into QB POS and with the data in the correct fields, it prints labels the way I want them.
I had another question here about printing labels in A5 but never could get the right Barcode font so this is Plan C:)
        Thanks

You could do this with one liner:

let's say you have (or would design ) a table with those desired fields: Item, color, size, style

data=.......the data you got from quickbook.........

          Code:
          property_from_string("item:C,color:C,size:N,style:C",data)
This will populate your table with the desired fields in the desired format.

By the way, it's not a good idea to use comma as a separator. Use something like a pipe or tilde

            Another useful method:
            table.POPULATE_FROM_STRING
