Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    basequeryrun and parentform.find()

    I have the following code in a form's OnActivate event:

    Code:
    'the form's filtering and order
    'frm.basequeryrun("acid = var->vcAC_ID","invert('20'+RIGHT(FLITENO,2)+'-'+LEFT(FLITENO,3))")

    'find the fltno from the current fltno global variable
    'typical fltno could be "005-16
    'findfltno would be "2016-005"

    IF fltno = "" THEN
    	'
    ELSE
    	dim findfltno as c
    	FindFltno = "20" + right(fltno,2)+"-"+left(fltno,3)
    	parentform.find(Findfltno)
    END IF
    This code runs and the variables have the values that I think are needed, but the find does not work.
    I put a button on the form which runs an Alpha default find dialog box. I enter the same text that's in the variable
    and the find works.

    What am I missing?

    Re: basequeryrun and parentform.find()

    What is the data type and scope of var->vcAC_ID? Seems to me you would want

    frm.basequeryrun("acid = "+s_quote(var->vcAC_ID),"invert('20'+RIGHT(FLITENO,2)+'-'+LEFT(FLITENO,3))")

      Data type is C.
      Currently "01" or "02" etc...

      Global variable.
      The base query is working just fine.
      It's the parentform.find that doesn't work.

        Misunderstood.

        For parentform.find() to work the underlying table, and thus the form, must be ordered on the field being found.
        There can be only one.

          Re: basequeryrun and parentform.find()

          So the basequery is ordered on an expression, not a field.
          Is it possible to do a find on a field when the form has been opened using a basequery?
          If so, what would the code look like.

            Re: basequeryrun and parentform.find()

            I may well have misunderstood yet again. The code you provided seemed to indicate that the basequeryrun() was commented out and there was no order being set. I think you included that to show something put in effect earlier in the script. You should be able to find on the expression since you set that expression as the order in the basequeryrun().

            Is the fliteno field always filled completely? The "invert('20'+RIGHT(FLITENO,2)+'-'+LEFT(FLITENO,3))") assumes it is always full.

            You could try another ordering immediately before the find to test.

            Code:
            dim findfltno as c
            FindFltno = "20" + right(fltno,2)+"-"+left(fltno,3)
            tbl = table.current()
            tbl.order("invert('20'+RIGHT(rtrim(FLITENO),2)+'-'+LEFT(FLITENO,3))")
            parentform.resynch()
            parentform.find(Findfltno)
            There can be only one.

              Re: basequeryrun and parentform.find()

              Sorry for the confusion. What's clear to me is not always clear to someone else.
              I'm in the process of doing a much better job of adding documentation to my code so when I look at it later,
              I know what I was trying to do. I changed my note to make it more obvious.

              What you thought was remarked out was just notes to myself about what I was doing.

              Code:
              ''NOTE: This form is opened from the form "Trip Log Menu", button labeled "Open Trip Log"
              ''the form's filtering and order code
              ''frm.basequeryrun("acid = var->vcAC_ID","invert('20'+RIGHT(FLITENO,2)+'-'+LEFT(FLITENO,3))")

              ''if the global variable "fltno" has a value then find that record
              ''the field fliteno contains (Example "005-18") the 005 trip of the year "20" + 18
              ''so the filtered form is ordered by "invert(year and then trip number)"

              IF fltno = "" THEN
              	'
              ELSE
              	dim findfltno as c
              	FindFltno = "20" + right(fltno,2)+"-"+left(fltno,3)
              	parentform.find(Findfltno)
              END IF
              So I am trying to manipulate the form to load the record called out by the global variable fltno.
              A button on the form using action scripting "find by key dialog (standard) works fine.
              But I want to complete the find automatically behind the scene.

              Thanks

                Ron,

                Can you not look at the xbasic behind the the button and just use that in the 'OnActivate' event? Might need a bit of editing to get it to behave as desired.

                  Re: basequeryrun and parentform.find()

                  The xbasic behind the find by key dialog is simply topparent.find().

                  Ron,

                  what happens if you comment out

                  parentform.find(Findfltno)

                  and put in

                  parentform.find("someknownvalue")
                  There can be only one.

                    Re: basequeryrun and parentform.find()

                    The xbasic behind the action script is

                    Code:
                    'Display standard Find_by_Key dialog in current form.
                    topparent.find()
                    The code opens a the standard dialog for finding records. This dialog does work.

                    I tried parentform.find("2003-056") and it did not work.

                    Running the debug(1) and the code is stepping through all the lines.

                      Well, that took way longer than it should have.

                      Change to

                      parentform.find(invert(Findfltno))

                          It might be worth a note in the docs or an addition to the discussion. I'll turn it in and see what Sarah thinks.

                          Since the index/order key values are created by the order expression in the basequeryrun() and they are inverted the values to find in that query list must also be supplied as inverted.
