Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    List Insert Quandary

I want to automatically insert a related record into table2 after table1 is saved.

Table1 is saved from the detail section of a list control.

To make things more difficult, Table2 has a constraint on it. You can't enter a record into Table2 unless there is a corresponding record in Table1 already.

I am not using SQL - so I can't do it with a trigger. (I'm using Access.)

There is an AfterInsert event on the list control, but I can't use that. The AfterInsert event does not actually save the record to the database, it only saves the record to the list. So at that point, I can't enter a record into Table2 because of the constraint.

There is an AfterSynchronizeRecord event that should be perfect for this, but I can't figure out how to get the primary key value of Table1. The other table1 fields come up with proper values in e.data, but the primary key field does not.

One idea I had was to make an invisible Child list for Table2 and add the new row to Table2 in the AfterInsert Event of Table1 - then, when the sync happens the tables should all get synced together. But that seems like a lot of work for something which I think should be easier than that.

    Any suggestions? I'm stuck.

What is the evaluation that decides it is corresponding?

I am not sure what you are asking Charles. I need one record in table2 for every record in table1. There is no evaluation.

There can eventually be more than 1 record in table2, but it starts with a single, default record.

What I mean is how does table2 "know" theres a matching record in 1? In other words does it look for a single value to be the same or multiple?
For instance I have a customer table, and a job table. I know the job matches the customer by a unique id and NOT the pk and there can be more than one job in the job table.
So, it seems like once you save the info in table one - you can insert into 2? In my application ( I use MySQL) I just do an insert with xbasic into the job table after I submit to the customer. The link is the unique id, then I get the Max(ID) with the unique id and set its value back into the component and save it back to table 1.

It's a bit of a round trip but works for me. I hope that makes sense.
        Am I waaaay off here?

So my suggestion would be to run an insert using xbasic via the same save button you use to save the first record.

Table2 Knows there is no record in Table1 because it is setup as a foreign key. They are related as part of the database structure in Access. That is the way it was setup to begin with.

          The issue is timing.

However, I think I can try what you are suggesting.

In the aftersync event, I don't have direct access to the new PK so far as I can tell, but I could look it up. It should be there by the time the aftersync server side event fires. I'll have to see how that works.
