Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    List Sync Add Records Only

    I have a phonegap app that generates 4k of new records in off-line mode. I'm looking for the best method to transfer those records to the server. I'm using MySql. These are all new entries so there is no update in the process. The method I'm currently using loops through the list and creates an object variable that I then transfer to an xbasic where I create a backup file then have a routine that reads the data and inserts it into a table. I would like to use phonegap file transfer to copy the data from the local file system to my server (so I will have a backup of the actual list data) and then process that json file.

    Has anyone tried this? Is there a better method?

    Thanks
    Tom

    When you say the app generates the new records, do you mean that the records are added to a List Control using it's addTableRow() method or do you use the appendRows() method?

    And have you checked out the getListData() method?

      I'm using the addTableRow() method.

        On the getListData() method I haven't tried it but what I have found is that I have to keep the list object clear of data or the app dies when I get over a few hundred records. So I have to see if getListData() pulls from the list or from the local storage. I'll give it try now.

          Ok, as I thought. If you have the list filter set to false (show no records), then no list data is collected, if the list filter is set to true it works. I have to see what happens on the phone if I set the list filter to true. This is similar, but easier, that what I am currently doing. The problem is not knowing how long it takes to transfer the data from the phone to the server so the xbasic function can process the data. What I'm thinking is to get a full list count and chunk out the data in 500 record increments.

            Actually, since you mentioned that you were thinking of looping through the list to create an array of data to send to the server to process, it threw me off thinking of the more obviously solution....
            Just use the saveListEdits() method:
            https://www.alphasoftware.com/docume...s%20Method.xml
            You can even configure your batch size with it.

              That is where I started. The issue is when you upload 1k of records the whole thing is just too slow. For example batching at 50 records is over 60 seconds per batch.

              What I would really like to do is file upload the list data file and process that file on the server. I've been playing around with this and I can see the file on my phone but I have not been able to get it to upload.

                Did you ever find a solution to your problem? I think I may be facing a similar problem. I assume you are not using Android. They appear to have a built-in timeout of 50 seconds that even Alpha says that they cannot override. You said your saves were taking 60 seconds per batch.

                  Hi

                  I ended up writing a javascript routine that batches the records and uploads them 100 at a time. I bring 100 records into the list (client side filter), loop through the list, create a batch id, pass the records to a state variable and import with xbasic. After import I verify the import and it's good, then I select the next 100 records from the list. Each 100 records I push out an update to a DIV with the record count. This has worked reliably for the past year or so. If I were to start over I would look at SQL lite on the phone. I'm working in Android.

                  Hope this helps.

                  tom
