Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha is advising all to upgrade to the pre-release 4940 due to the Server security issue.

Some users have reported issues with the security fix for Alpha Anywhere when using some older releases. We are working to address this more completely. In the interim, customers are advised to updated to build 4940 or newer.
I support this as our servers went down for 30 minutes after applying the fix. I think this should be an official release.

    The errors I got.

Agreed, I cannot/will not upgrade production servers to a pre-release. I know in this instance the risk is minimal as they all have web security switched on. I will test over the weekend using just the .dll patch

Same here. Pre-releases are not production worthy. I've learned over the years to even wait a couple of weeks after an official patch and watch for feedback in the forum (or patches to the official patch).

I use Alpha's web security so my understanding is my app's aren't vulnerable anyways.

            Lenny,

Can you confirm that an Alpha server with security on is not vulnerable anyway?

Mike, I understand from a conversation that the vulnerability still exists if security framework is on but that it is lessened.

While the security framework adds an additional layer of security, it does not completely address this vulnerability. We are strongly urging ALL customers to apply this fix, regardless of your security framework settings.

Is there a fix for earlier versions of Alpha Anywhere version 12?

The fix is only available for build 4770. We have always recommended that server operators run the most recent release of the Application Server as well as any other relevant software on your servers (e.g. Windows Updates, SQL Server, etc.) for the greatest possible security.

Good Advice. But world is far from perfect especially internet. But if I understand this Alpha case old version 11 gets security patch but not the old version of 12. What is the logic?
                        ( I have latest version of 12)

I agree. What is the logic of supporting old Version 11 but not older (but newer thatn ver 11) versions of Version 12?

There are also multiple versions of V11 - My guess is the patch only supports the most current version of V11 also.

How many different versions are they supposed to patch? If would be nice if the patch was universal, but it's not likely to happen.

Very good question Larry. I leave for others possibility to answer to your question.

But the truth is that ALL VERSION 11 users will get update but NOT ALL VERSION 12 users. I can see the difference. Critical security updates belongs to all in version 12. It is a question of trust.
