Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5_get_table_ptr(fld_ptr); fld_ptr.table_get() - cannot get these to work!

    I am trying to write a function that will get a pointer to the unknown child table for the specified field object name on a form. I dragged the Xbasic into the IW for the active form and get nothing but errors when I try to create indirection with variables. Does anyone have a script that does this, because the Wiki examples are not helping.

    frm = topparent.this
    fname = frm.name()
    fldname = "REASON" 'a parameter in the UDF

    ?fname
    ="DailySch"

    ?is_object(fldname)
    =.t.

    fld = eval("frm:"+fldname+".this")
    ?typeof(fld)
    = "P"

    This is what I have tried so far and a few other variations - none of which are working:

    ftbl = a5_get_table_ptr(fld)
    ERROR: Script:a5_get_table_ptr() line:14

    ftbl = fld.table_get()
    ERROR: fld.table_get(): Argument is incorrect data type

    This last error is what I get when I drag the field method into the IW
    vp = DailySch:Reason.table_get()
    ERROR: Object does not support requested interface.

    Is the child table field in a browse on the form or directly on the form? One to one relationship or one to many? Trying to understand the situation.

    For a child table field directly on the form you can use

    directly

    parentform:object_name.Field_Get().table_get().name_get()

    or indirectly

    eval("parentform:"+this.object.name+".Field_Get().table_get().name_get()")

      The child is 1:n and displays in the browse, but the field for the selected record in the browse is on the form.

      The function will popup a simple xdialog for editing the field and input it back to the current record.

        Re-reading I see you actually wanted the table pointer, not the table name.

        ptr =parentform:object_name.Field_Get().table_get()

        or

        ptr = eval("parentform:"+this.object.name+".Field_Get().table_get()")

          Thanks Stan I will give it a try. It was the eval() indirect syntax that I couldn't get right. But I wasn't getting the right result with what I thought should work in the IW.

          In my form button where I have all the info available, the script works fine. It was when I tried to create an UDF that I could use on other forms that getting the table pointer for the field became a problem.

          Won't I have to activate the field in the function in order to use this.object.name() ?

            I am not clear on how you are calling the function. I was just testing in the onarrive event for a field on a form to build the syntax.

            I think you could pass the object name of the field in question to the function as a parameter and change the code reference the parameter.

              Looking thru the Object Explorer I found a property that might help.

              ?DailySch:reason.entry.name
              = "f_req->REASON"

              At least I should be able to break that apart to get the table name and then the pointer I need. Will let you know if that works...

              ftname = DailySch:reason.entry.name
              ftname = word(ftname,1,"-")

              ?ftname
              = "f_req"

              ftbl = table.get(ftname)

              Now to indirectly get the full entry.name property string with eval() - well that was easier

              ?eval(fname+":"+fldname+".entry.name")
              = "f_req->REASON"
