Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Revision (Source) Control & Issue (Bug) Tracking

Greetings All (Its been a long time for me visiting this resource)

Today's (Wed) webinar brought to a head something that I have once again thought about visiting but had not gotten in gear to do.

While it mainly is an issue for developers with multiple team members or larger customer bases, it is something that can benefit all
developers and I was asking about this back in 2006 (I believe).

What have you done about Source Code Version Control? Today's webcast brought a tool called Git & SourceTree which looks pretty good
for a start, what others are being deployed by developers here? I have already downloaded these to look at, would you recommend
another set of tools & why?

Additionally, I want to replace a small homegrown Issue Tracker. I have spent this afternoon searching the Inet and reading about a bunch of
them, however I have not found anything that really fits my desire. I would like a local application (expandable to a web-based) solution
that would allow unlimited (or at least 5-10) projects to start for 2 -3 users, preferably in the free to very inexpensive range to see if it does
things in a way I can live with. Most free ones allow for a single user and very limited or a single project only. Has anyone come across or
is using one that meets these goals? If it can link into Git or another Source Control System that would be a big plus but not a total deal-
    breaker either.

Wish Alpha Software was farther along with what they were doing or going to be doing in the Source Control world so as to know that I
wasn't heading out into deep water, needlessly.

    Regards,
    Keith

Re: Revision (Source) Control & Issue (Bug) Tracking

I believe you can find it in softaculous. They download by way of cpanel or others. I know I found one on cpanel by searching softaculous downloads a short time ago. It was for myltiple users, web based and multiple projects. Can't remember the name off the top. Pretty sure it was free too.
    Almost positive alpha has none.
MYTeam (Manage Your Team) is an extremely powerful project management tool, and it's easy to use for both administrators and end-users with a really intuitive structure.

It's a free open source task management and project management system, based on Yii Framework, easy to use and with a great perspective of growth for the future. You can create one or more Projects and manage several types of Tasks for each one. You can also create and manage Timesheet hours.

Myt can send email notifications based on some events, such as Task assignments and Project associations. All features are configurable from the Administration Panel.

Manage Your Team is released under the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial License V2.0.
    another:
qdPM is a free web-based project management tool suitable for a small team working on multiple projects.

It is fully configurable. You can easy manage Projects, Tasks and People.

Customers interact using a Ticket System that is integrated into Task management.

qdPM is released under the GNU General Public License .

      Dave,

Can you provide links to "Manage Your Team"? I have not been successful in locating it.

Re: Revision (Source) Control & Issue (Bug) Tracking

I want to expand a little bit on what I am trying to do.

I want to implement Source Code Revision Control... Git looks very promising, there are some others but I want keep something simple with a Windows Interface, whether it hooks into Windows Explorer or standalone is not a big issue either way. I would like it to support 3 - 5 users on a behind-the-firewall installation to start with so that it does not initially have a quantity or projects limitation OR up-charges for additional projects like *most* of the web based services do. I would like to be able to expand in the future to a web based service once it is justifiable but NOT as an initial implementation.

I have read a bit on GiT & GiTServer, SVNclients & Server & TFSexpress (by Microsoft) that allows Gitclients and is free for up to 5 developers, has anyone actually set up a development environment for a small developer team of 5 or less with any of these tools?

For the Issue/Big Tracking, the same parameters apply... I have had a harder time finding some good Tracking Systems, MantisBT looks like it has potential but most do not configure behind-the-firewall even in stripped down installations or require putting up IIS, etc in order to run them. All additional overhead, configuration, management that I am trying to avoid at all possible costs at this point in time.

I would have to believe that somewhere in our community, someone has already done something like this...

Additional Benefits would be Issue/Bug Tracking able to interface with Source Control, GiT, etc so that build/release data can update the Tracking System.

Back in the '90s I used, CVS, RCS & Razor but the initial weight & costs are too heavy to start with for this project.

        Thanx,
        Keith

I found Softaculous, many, many pieces... initial appearance is a ton of research is required to determine what would work for me. Saving that for if a simpler implementation does not make an appearance.

I found "qdPM" and read up on it. The one I cannot find at all is "MyTeam - Manage Your Team" which is why I asked earlier if you could point me in a direction for it... googling has not done it for me.

                Dave,

Thanx, a quick look at ManageMyTeam seems to suggest that it is not really designed with any kind of typical computer programming bug tracking support.

This type of stuff has been discussed many times in this forum... including posts by the original poster of this thread many years ago.

Here is the latest thread... which again... didn't really go anywhere.
                  https://www.alphasoftware.com/alphaf...source+control

Apart from Bug Tracking, which would be an easy process to create, Revision and Source control are not concepts that Alpha lends itself to.

                      David,
Do you mean because the components in Alpha are not stored as simple programming code, but are rather stored as massive files with property value pairs and the order of these properties can be scrambled around by AA, I think by just resaving the component, which makes it very difficult to compare two source files?

                      All,
One thing I cannot understand about all the source control (SC) products out there, is this concept of moving towards distributed source code control. They let everyone have their own copy of a source control database and they let individuals check things in and out locally. They do not prevent users from working on same source module simultaneously. They just detect conflicts after the fact - when users try to upload changes from local SC to the master SC. The providers of distributed SC seem to think one can use a comparison utility to compare changes between multiple versions of a file and merge the changes together. It maybe a bit tedious to do when working with line oriented source files (like C++ or JavaScript files), but it is certainly possible. But when working with property based files that can have their property value paris completely re-ordered just by saving the file, argh : - (

Yes... the way that Alpha is built... you could not, with current tools, check components out and back in... and create a master component by merging multiple changed components... or merge changes from even a single component. You could check out and lock... and then check in, overwrite, and unlock.

I use git with github and assembla for bug tracking /workload. Though communication is key. My teams keep a Google sheet and will update who's working on what avoiding the same component being edited. Giving responsible of each component to a person.
