Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Developer Detached?

Is there a setting that allows you to use multiple monitors when using developer? It's not uncommon to work with 2 or more builders at a time. However that appears to be out of bounds with developer.

    Re: Developer Detached?

I have stretched the environment window to cover both screens but in the end I just got over it and went back to one thing at a time. I really don't think AS is really suited for multiple monitors. I also keep my web application open on the other screen and upload my component then use dev tools in chrome to tweak the CSS the way I want it then I can easily make the exact changes in Alpha so in that case I do use two monitors but other than that it just doesn't really work well.

The problem with using two monitors is that then you desire three.

I use three but I do not 'stretch' Alpha across any of them. I think the more normal use is to keep misc tools on outside monitors and your main work area in front of you. My three are 24" so ample space for my work and Netflix at the same time.

My iPad runs the Netflix, so I guess I am watching 3 too!

Guess there are work around s to everything, but it would be nice if your component builders were mobile! yuck! yuck!
Let's think out of the Dialog Box : When will the Alpha Developer App for Android, and IOS be released?

Don't forget Linux. I really would love to escape the Windows world.

Alpha can't put out a release without having to put out dozens of fires immediately after... and half of those fixes break others areas... and there's a wish for iOS, Android, and Linux ports?

I wish Alpha would simply test its features under the one platform it's development environment does live in... and further test on its multiple server platforms.
How about releasing Official Release Patches... instead of forcing everyone to move to a pre-release with yet... wait for it... more bugs... just to get Official Release stuff fixed.

This is just for UX. In other features I have not seen many problems during six years period of AA.

I run with 2 28" screens. I keep Alpha on one... and preview / debug on the other.

In Working Preview, you can Detach the Working Preview Window... so that's helpful at times. Plus... the detached Working Preview window has Automatic Refresh.

i did forget to tell about my screen.

I can look just one at time so I just have one touch screen. I then use virtual desktop, task view, snap and flip when needed.

I use 2 screens, 1 for the developer and 1 for the published app.

                          Re: Developer Detached?

Three screens here. Center for Alpha. One for SQL, Outlook, and other stuff. Third for Chrome running my app(s) locally. I don't use live/working preview all that often because how the app looks in live/working preview is rarely what the app looks like in the browser. Then again most all of my apps are web based (not mobile).

And yeah ...kinda want a forth monitor.

I use two screens not counting my laptop. One for what I'm developing in (Alpha, Access, VS, whatever) and the other for browsers. I almost never use working preview and prefer to publish and view in the actual environment I'm going to ultimately publish to (usually setup dev/test/prod). There are so many variations due to environment that it just doesn't make any sense to do otherwise. For mobile apps I check them periodically on the devices so I don't get too far ahead of myself.

                              Re: Developer Detached?

Okay, those that know me will be aware that I am always striving for the "perfect working environment" (not found it yet and may never do!) so when working at my main desktop I now use a docked Surface Pro connected to two monitors with the surface pro screen disabled. Then I have my (older) desktop also fired up connected to two more monitors. All the monitors are the same with the same resolution. I also use a program called multiplicity that allows me to use a single keyboard and mouse for both. Finally I have a cheap 10 inch windows tablet running that shows my ticketing system. This is also connected using multiplicity. This works for me on several levels. Firstly I am not putting the full load on a single device. Then if I need to vpn onto a client system I can do so from one device without affecting what I have running on the other device/s. "Copy and paste" works between the devices. If I have an issue, need to reboot one device can still carry on with other stuff on the other device while waiting...

When I am in "developer mode" I would normally run developer and Navicat on the Surface Pro and have the applications open on the desktop pc.

Also if I need to have more than one application open in developer I have a program called Groupy that runs them all in tabs much as the browser works, making it very easy to switch between them. This really saves on real estate especially as I prefer to use full screen rather than windowed applications.
