Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

25GB Alpha .dmp files - what are they and why do thye take up so much space?

    Hi,

My machine is low on space and I discovered that I have 25GB of .dmp files in the AppData\Local\Temp\Alpha Anywhere folder. Can anyone tell me what they are for and if I can stop Alpha from generating them? I am on Version 12.4.5.2, build 4770.

    Many thanks
    Georgina

Have you tried sending them to Recycle bin?
Then if it bombs, you can recover.
If it works, you have a lot more space.

      Hi Ted,

Yes I can delete them and I have done it before with no issues. I just want to know why they keep appearing and taking up valuable space.

      Many thanks

My folder has nothing in it Georgina, so I suspect it's a setting somewhere.
Dumping is probably triggered by a program exception as you probably know.
But then my version is donkeys years old and not used much.
Have you searched for "dump" on the Alpha Wiki?

I'm also finding hard drives on multiple machines filling up with Alpha*.dmp files going back to last December. 83 files totaling 31GB worth of files on the machine I am looking at now. Many seem to be generated when Alpha is shut down at the end of the day. Research indicates there is an issue with Alpha but very unspecific. Should I be worried or should I just create a startup batch file that deletes them?

            Hello John,

Under normal operation, Alpha Anywhere should not produce dump files. I see that you are using an older version of Alpha Anywhere. It is likely the issue you are experiencing has already been fixed. I recommend updating to the newest release to see if that fixes your issue. If the problem persists after upgrading, we would need you to send a report along with the dump file(s) to [email protected].

              Thanks for the followup Sarah,

After posting the above, I cleaned up and updated all of the computers to 6699 and tested and found the same issue so I created a support ticket. Based on the response I believe there had been an issue that they thought was fixed. I sent in a new .dmp file and awaiting word.

I am having trouble with DMP files as well. Our server produced 27 DMP files in one day...taking up over 27 gigs of space. Our site is hosted by Zebrahost and I just submitted a ticket. Wasn't sure if there was something I should tell them to look for? Any recommendations?

Best thing to do of course is to figure out what's causing this. I had a severe problem a while ago and wrote a file delete function to get rid of them automatically, piggy-backed it onto another process that ran every hour. If I didn't do this, I couldn't go to bed - disk would fill up, server would quit on the users.

To underscore what Sarah said above - under normal operation, Alpha should never create a dump file. If your server is creating dump files, PLEASE submit one of them in a bug report. We will analyze the dump file and work with you to identify and fix the specific problem. While I understand automatically deleting the dump files as a stop-gap measure, if you do not send us the files for analysis, we will not be aware of the problem and it will not just go away on its own.

Yeah, to clarify, I sent files to Alpha, worked with them on it. But until it was resolved I had to do something about the fast consumption of disk space.

Yes, the .dmp files are created by the web server.

I deleted a couple of UX components that I had uploaded recently where I was experimenting with persistent login. I had written some custom xBasic to the components as well. My xBasic must have had issues because after I removed them from the server the DMP files have stopped
