Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Total in parent not summing total in line items

I have a parent named patients linked one to many to a line item dbf called patlnit, linking field being "caseno". I have set the field rule for the field in the parent named "invtotal" on the data entry tab as a simple default expression tablesum ("patlnit","caseno = "+s_quote(caseno),"total") as suggested by a person in this forum. It didn't work. So instead I also tried setting the expression on the field types as a calculated field. Still doesn't work. I am able to create a button on the invoice entry form to accomplish the task, but requires me to push the button which could easily be forgotten if someone else, which does happen on occasion, is entering the invoice . The example in the help file says TABLESUM("PURCHASE.DBF", "MANAGER = 'FARLEY'", "COST"). Replacing the field names as follows; TABLESUM("patlnit", "caseno = 'caseno'", "total") also does not work.

    Anyone know what works?

We need your definition of "doesn't work". Did you re-evaluate the field rules after creating the calculated field expression.

In my opinion there is no reason to store that total in the parent record. It should be calculated on a report or on a form at the time the record is viewed. Done that way it is always up to date and doesn't require recalculating the field rules for the table each time a record is entered.

Hmm for some reason it worked in my old app. Oh well I will see what I can do about adding the summary on the invoice report with a calculated field. I think at the time many years ago when I created the original report I couldn't get the report to print right, that's why I did it that way. Thanks!

Can't figure out the report design. Soooo... I fixed it on the entry form with an on arrive event. It works.

If you are up for another question relating to this same "invtotal" field in the parent: I like looking at total billed for the current month for planning purposes. Simple report with the calculated total based on this expression: total(patients->invtotal,grp->Grand,grp->detail) It's giving me the wrong total. I checked the records with a filter to make sure there were not erroneous dates for this month and there are not.

When the report is rendered you are probably getting the total value from the composite record for each record in the set.

Never mind on the second question below for simple report to show grand total for current month, I figured it out. I was basing the report on the invoice header field "invtotal". Don't know why it came out with the wrong amount. But when I based it on the child lineitems and created a calc field to sum all the totals in that table for the current month it worked. fortunately I had included a dateout field to base it on in that table already.
