Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Converting Date Numbers to Text

    I need to convert part of a date string to text.
    Example,
    Picking out the day (I am in DDMMYYY format), 01/01/1900 would return "One"
    This is the script I am using and it works,

    ? strtran(" "+str(substr(dtoc({31/01/1900}),1,2),10,0,"XW")," ")

    However in this instance, the text value of "Thirty One" appears as below, and concatenated.
    = "ThirtyOne"

    Question. Is there a way of displaying "Thirty One" easily?

    Ted,
    Since my region is set for MM/DD/YYYY, it may not be quite a direct translation but in the interactive window, this appears to work:

    ?str(day({01/31/2018}),10,0,"XF")
    = "Thirty one"
    will that work it for you?

      Not sure what your intent is with the strtran(). It is stripping out the space you want between Thirty and One.

      ? str(substr(dtoc({31/01/1900}),1,2),10,0,"XW")
      = "Thirty One"
      There can be only one.

            Re: Converting Date Numbers to Text

            I noticed an oddity. The str() function documentation indicates that it converts a number to a right justified character string.

            Well and good but.....

            ? str("01",12,2)
            = " 1.00"

            ? str("01",25,2,"XW")
            = "One And 00/100"

            ? str("A01",12,2)
            = "A01"

            ? str("01A",12,2)
            = "01A"

            ? str("01A",12,2,"XW")
            = "01A"
            There can be only one.

              Thanks Al, that is most useful.
              In this instance however, there is a striking date for a transaction,
              It needs to be converted so that the document shows;
              Day - "Twenty Seven"
              Month - "May"
              Year - "2018"
              These are specific and separate fields.

              Stan, you seem to have established that
              ? str("01A",12,2)
              = "01A"
              without the "XW"

              does the same job as
              ? str("01A",12,2,"XW")
              = "01A"
              with the "XW"

              Or did I misread what you were saying?
              BTW, I will send the Linear Programming problem by PM in the next few days, but post the concept on the Forum.

                Re: Converting Date Numbers to Text

                My point was that the documentation is in error or the str() function has an undocumented feature. Passing anything but a number to the function should return an error if that is the defined parameter type expected.

                "01", "01A", and "A01" are not numbers.

                Val() should accomplish the reverse of str().

                ? val("01")
                = 1

                ? val("01A")
                = 1

                ? val("A01") 'inconsistent but expected
                = 0

                ? val(1) 'inconsistent considering what str() does
                ERROR: Argument is incorrect data type
                There can be only one.

                  Missed the month and year into fields in the thread. Was it mentioned?

                  Code:
                  y1=day({01/31/1900})
                  y2=cmonth({01/31/1900})
                  y3=year({01/31/1900})

                  y=str(y1,10,0,"XW")

                  msgbox(y+crlf()+y2+crlf()+y3)
