Problem with Regex expression

Hi All,

back to regular expressions after a long while away..

' **** trying to change "N123QE,HB-FWA8,A2-ZBW" to "N123QE,HB-FWA[8],A2-ZBW"

old_id_example_1 = "N123QE,HB-FWA8,A2-ZBW"

new_id_example_1 = regex_merge(old_id_example_1,"HB-F{A-Z}{A-Z}{0-9}","HB-F{A-Z}{A-Z}\[{0-9}\]","S")

ui_msg_box("Test1",new_id_example_1)

' **** trying to change "HB-FTZ18" to "HB-FTZ[18]"

old_id_example_2 = "HB-FTZ18"

new_id_example_2 = regex_merge(old_id_example_2,"HB-F{A-Z}{A-Z}{0-9}{0-9}","HB-F{A-Z}{A-Z}\[{0-9}{0-9}\]","S")

ui_msg_box("Test2",new_id_example_2)

neither work in this example, can anyone guide me towards a solution, thank you

Don't know much about regex. This works for the two examples you gave.

Examples

? hb_brkt("abc,123,jfg")
= "abc,123,jfg"

? hb_brkt("N123QE,HB-FWA8,A2-ZBW")
= "N123QE,HB-FWA[8],A2-ZBW"

? hb_brkt("HB-FTZ18")
= "HB-FTZ[18]"

Can you do something with this?

? regex_merge("HB-FTZ18","([a-z]+)|([0-9]+)","(?1"$&")"+"(?2[$&)"+"(?2])")
= "HB-FTZ[18]"

A function will work well for multiple occurrences of a process.
A single line is really just a one time shortcut, however, you can add a field to your table and make it Calculated, referencing the field you need changed. The results will appear in the calculated field.
Yes, there will be data redundancy, but that is your choice whether to be a purist or not. (Given a 1 terabyte Baracuda is around

Came up with this function when I couldnt get the regular expression to work:

FUNCTION Old_id_swiss AS C (old_id_text AS C )
old_id_list = comma_to_crlf(old_id_text)
for numb = 1 to *count(old_id_list)
if left(word(old_id_list,numb),4) = "HB-F" then
old_id_list = *word_replace(old_id_list,regex_merge(word(old_id_list,numb),"\d+","\[$&\]"),numb,crlf())
end if
next numb
old_id_swiss = crlf_to_comma(old_id_list)
END FUNCTION
