Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Bought a NEW Computer

Ok, so I FINALLY bought a new system - it should be here tomorrow night. How do I migrate correctly and with the least amount of fuss.
My thoughts are to install AA first then copy my projects into the new install.

What do I need to do so that when I fire up my software, all of my projects are there including PG Build applications?

DO I need to deactivate the license?
What is the correct order and steps to take?

I have an external USB drive now that I plan to hook up to the new system where I house my projects? Yes, I have made backups, but not in the last few days.
My current system is still in working order so I can easily get to anything if I need to.

Thanks for any and all input on this!

BTW new system ( yes I am a gamer too!) seems to be an incredible bang for the buck.

Using a cyberpower pc now. Very fast and very strong. From Best Buy. I have a client using the same computer for a server. Setup was done by his IT at my suggestion and he is running faster than was ever possible on a brand new Dell server. He is usung win10 pro and has a VM for winxp running too.
Might be easier to name the new pc same as old one. I got the 2T hd, 16G memory and 3.5GHZ one. It is a year old and never a hiccup

Projects should be in their own folders on a drive.

You could clone the hard drive rather than copy

There is absolutely no need to name your new computer the same as the old one as far as Alpha is concerned. You do not need to do anything special for activation.

          Re: Bought a NEW Computer

This is not a change. Alpha has never required or even recommended that a replacement computer use the same name as the previous one, though I have seen several message board posters suggest doing so.

It used to be for "an easy" transition from old computer to new, we had to name the new computer the same as the old one because
            of Alpha Licensing.

Well, either way, I still want to know what I need to do.
So far it seems like I obviously need to install AA on the new PC then what?
Do I simply copy my project folder into AA? If that is the case - WOW - so simple.

That is essentially "all" you need to do (to start with).
There are other things that might be affected by the move (connection to your back-end and/or A5 server, firewall settings).
It's difficult to tell without knowing your setup, but as you know, it's one step at a time.

Lenny, if that is the case, why did I have to shell out $299 for a new A5V11 license as the old one wouldn't activate on my new PC?

                    Re: Bought a NEW Computer

The naming issue is in the V11 documentation.
When a machine breaks, a newcone with the same name can be used with existing V11 software.
In the old days, Alpha would help you by deleting the old name so you could put in a new one if you were really stuck.
Perhaps you didn't ask the question Jon?

                      Ted,

If you mean Alpha would delete the old PC name on their systems so that I could re-register with the new name that's exactly what I requested. I was told in no uncertain terms that thatc was not an option as my license was out of support. Only options given were to rename my computer (not suggested by Alpha, but known to have worked in the past), possibly breaking my V12 & V10.5 licenses, or buy another copy of V11 for $299.

Ok, so far so good with the new computer - runs like a champ!
I looked at my old computer, the "workspace" is located on a certain folder in my C drive.
Should I copy that folder to a thumb drive and put it in my C drive on the new PC? Does anyone know if the path is relevant and necessary, rather does it need to be exactly the same?
Is this the best way to import my project?

                          Re: Bought a NEW Computer

I would certainly try to keep the path the same just for the sake of sanity.
It really depends on how you wrote the code for your project.

                            Re: Bought a NEW Computer

Ok, so far so good! I copied my project folder and all of it's contents to a thumb drive. I then copied the folder into My Documents folder which btw is not the exact original path. Fired up AA, clicked to open other workspaces, and I am right back to work. Zero issues.

My anxiety was unnecessary, Alpha Software went right back to work as though nothing changed including connection strings, etc. I literally went right back to working on my project immediately. The biggest pain was copying the files to the thumb drive because it took quite some time, but the new computer is much faster and copying the files to the new PC was quick and painless.

I'll post back any caveats I run into - but again, this went REALLY SMOOTH. Simple as copy and paste - right back at it!

                              Charles,
Just wondering? Which variant did you get? I got the very old one with 3.2GHZ some years back and the newer one is 3.5GHZ. They now have a 4.2GHZ.
Also, can you give a money amount you paid. Mine was 769.00 a year ago from Best Buy(shipped).
