Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Windows Update Breaks Application Server

We have had reports from some users that the Windows updates that occurred last night have broken the Application Server.

In the mean time, while we are researching the issue, to fix the problem uninstall the following Windows Updates

    KB4338818
    KB4339093

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

    Hi Selwyn,

Can you confirm if this impacted Windows 2012 servers (non R/2)

The behavior I am experiencing is if I reboot the windows server then my Alpha instances will run for about an hour but then they will start to crash. I am unable to restart them through Always up. So the only option is to reboot the windows machine again.

    Thanks,

    Scott

It's also important to note after you uninstall them, you have to prevent them from being installed again. If your server is set to auto-install, then they'll be installed again the next morning and you'll be doing this all over again.

Here are detailed instructions (courtesy Zebrahost) on how to roll back the Microsoft updates

              Go to Control Panel
              Programs/ Uninstall a program
View Installed updates (on the left)
Wait for it to populate – will take time
              Sort by date
Look for the KBs in question
              Right click – uninstall
              Choose restart later
Don’t restart until you’ve uninstalled all of them (2-3)
****Then make sure the server is set NOT to automatically install the updates – download only (not doing this will install the above KBs the next morning then you have to start over) Under windows Updates change settings.

              Then reboot the server

Server reboot will take a long time as has to roll back install

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

                Hello ,
i think its more likely more than these updates and it do affect R2 .... and that goes on zebrahost as well ...
i was trying to find more details about the effects to alpha and so far the affects i fount is :
1 - alpha will go none responsive when it run for while ( not sure why ) and end up in crash
2- i don't have permission to kill alpha processor when i do Alt + Delete + cntl which prevent from using the same port when it crashed earlier

if anyone have same problems please post here to confirm

I have a Windows 2012 R2 server that is giving me problems this morning. It is up for about 15 minutes, and then it stops working. A restart "fixes" the problem for another 15 to 20 minutes.

However, neither of those updates is installed. Instead, last night it installed:

                    KB4338815
                    KB4338424
                    KB4338419

Which of these should I uninstall?

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

this is a completely different issue. your server is not activating. check the server logs. it will tell you why your server is not activating. the most likely cause is that the time on your server is wrong.

Which log should I check? I looked in the available logs and didn't see anything like that. Do I need to turn on a specific log?

Also, if the server was not activated, the message would be that the server is in demo mode or something, would it not?

I had the same thing a few weeks back where the server time suddenly went out by 15 mins. If you resynch the time on the server the issue goes away.

                              Larry,

Zebra lists the following updates cause the problem:

                              KB4338818, KB4339093, KB4338423

But it's not just those. I have a client who had only one of those 3 and unistalled it and the problem still did not go away. Only after he removed all the latest batch of updates did the Alpha WAS run correctly.

I can also confirm the start/restart problem which another client if mine had yesterday morning. Zebra rolled back the Windows install and the problem went away. I also have other client's who have had the same problem.
