Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

Perhaps I am missing something. The link for Windows server 2016 says they are still working on a fix for the issue - I don't see any actual fix I can download. (I realize AFTER I reinstall the update ...) However, the link does suggest some workarounds that turn the broken service on manually ... Anyone tried those?

Are you saying that if I have patch 5418, the server will work correctly?

All I did was install the server until it was up-to-date -

2018-07 Cumulative Update for Windows Server 2016 for x64-based Systems (KB4345418)

is installed - that patch does not have any issues with Alpha?

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

I think Microsoft does not know anything about issues with Alpha. The patch KB4355418 includes quality improvements for problems introduced in earlier MS updates. Maybe it solves the problem maybe not. You have to test.

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

Larry - Microsoft in their July 10 update broke many applications that required binding a protocol to an IP address, including their own IIS server. Alpha, obviously does port binding as a server and was thus affected. The July 16 update fixes this issue. If you have the July 16 Cumulative Update for Server 2016 (or any other Windows version) the Alpha WAS server should function normally again.

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

just to confirm - I've been holding off installing the automatically downloaded windows updates on the server until this was resolved. Can I now just let the server install all updates and it will be ok or do I still need to delete the offending updates first and do I need to apply the cumulative fix manually or will that also automatically download as part of autoupdate?

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

Lyndon, I think it depends on the Windows version. I found with Windows 10 that the additional update installed automatically. With Windows 7, I had to manually go to optional updates and select the 2018-07 Preview of Monthly Rollup (KB4338821) to install the fixes to the July 10 update. It appears that you can skip installing the July 10 update and install just the KB4338821 and Windows will be fully up-to-date with the fixes on Windows 7.

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

In my case, I had to nuke my server from orbit. Something went horribly wrong when I tried to uninstall the updates and the server never recovered.

After reinstalling everything with the updates turned off, I saw this post and I turned updates back on. It proceeded to install the latest version of the updates, so far as I could tell. (I have Windows Server 2016 essentials.)

Alpha appears to be running fine and I did not have to manually install any patches - just the windows updates.

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

We have a delay on installing Windows updates, but updates mentioned in this thread were installed last night, and now we are having the issue. Is this resolved by us uninstalling those updates, OR will we have to get latest Alpha version to resolve the issue? ie, does the resolution come from Microsoft, or from Alpha?

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

Uninstalling the updates should fix your problem. However, look back a bit to a previous post in this thread. Lenny posts some links with downloads that may help fix the problem so you don't have to uninstall. Just check for your server version.

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

Carol, my understanding is that applying the appropriate microsoft update for your server from the list given in this thread by Lenny 07-17-2018 should fix the problem caused by the earlier microsoft updates.

Thank you, Larry and Lyndon. We uninstalled the updates and have remained up for over 45 minutes now, so are hoping that fixes it for now. We were going down every 15-30 minutes before that. ANYWAY, I'm hoping, and assuming, based on your info, that the latest windows updates will be OK when they are installed this next weekend.

This message board is SOOOOO great for this!

By necessity I had to install the NEW patch as mentioned by Lenny on one of the servers I deal with. There was also another roll up patch two days later which appears to also specifically cover this issue. Ran that as well and the application server running on the server has behaved for a whole working day with full use by my client so looks good for me. Windows Server 2012 R2,
