Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

I uninstalled all patches from last night and my server has been up for long enough that I believe the issue is solved. I don't know which of the three I listed caused the problem, but I won't be installing patches until someone figures out what can and can't be installed!

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

What I found was that regardless of the version of Windows, the update installed on or around July 11th labelled Security Update or July Cumulative Rollup is the issue. It appears they may have changed something with how network bindings are allowed through .Net. I suspect it has to do with utilizing a non-documented "feature" of internet protocol that Microsoft has deemed a security threat and patched, thus breaking applications that used the method including Alpha Server. Hopefully, there will be an update to the update to restore the functionality or a work-around will be published soon.

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

I wonder what actually are the benefits of developing and how they have resources to develop two server line in Alpha. Sure customers do not benefit anything of this waste of development resources.

Obviously the future of business applications are in Alpha IIS implementation and Alpha should just offer IIS to customers and announce Was as a deprecated solution.

It would be nice again to see from Alpha something light for the future. In year 2014 they did have hype and all innovative ideas but not anymore.

Have you read the release notes lately? Each version has tons of new features. Not sure where this idea is coming from.

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

My Alpha WAS was crashing after 10 minutes too on a Win 2012 server.

The KB's mentioned by Selwyn above were not the issue for me, it was the Security Update on July 11th as mentioned by Brad Weaver above (sorry in my haste to fix the issue I didn't note the KB).

After uninstalling this, my WAS has been running for 30 mins without issue.

From what I can see the issue relates to the ability of the WAS to recycle the socket listener.

Before uninstalling the update the error log shows the socket listener could not be recycled:

[Sat Jul 14 14:14:47 2018] [info] The socket listener is being recycled because it has been idle for 60 seconds.
[Sat Jul 14 14:19:47 2018] [error] The server failed to reestablish the listener and must shut down: WSAEADDRINUSE - Address already in use while binding socket.

After uninstalling the update the error log shows the socket listener could be recycled:

[Sat Jul 14 18:58:12 2018] [info] The socket listener is being recycled because it has been idle for 60 seconds.
[Sat Jul 14 18:58:12 2018] [info] The server has recycled the listener.

            Hope this helps, Richard.

Today it is the update KB4338420 that was installed last night - even though I turned off auto-update...I am uninstalling it now - taking forever!

Yesterday I attempted to uninstall one of the updates on a Windows Server 2016. It never came back up. I have someone trying to put the operating system back together, otherwise, I'll have to Nuke from orbit and go to backup.

I'd like to hear more from Alpha on the progress being made on this issue as it is a critical problem. This will be especially problematic in organizations that have a policy regarding keeping Microsoft Servers up-to-date on any security patches. I can only assume that the silence on the matter is due to their energies being focused on trying to come up with a work-around.

Finally got the updates uninstalled and the server restarted - what a nightmare.
The restart time after uninstalling was an extremely LONG TIME.

My server wants to be restarted so that it can install the updates. I am trying to hold off until Alpha creates a solution. As long as we don't have an extended power outage I should be OK. I also found out that you might be able to fix things with a system restore. Restoring to the point right before the updates were installed. I have created a restore point manually. Has anyone tried that?

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

For what it is worth: my Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard server was updated on 7/11/18 with several updates and, knock on wood, has not had any issues.

So it may be that not all Windows Server 2012 server systems are affected.

My Windows 7 development server was affected by the updates dated 7/11/18. Once they were removed, the system has been functioning ok. HOWEVER, for some reason, Mysql 5.7 got totally wiped out and had to be reinstalled. Fortunately, I had good db backups.

That's the 2nd time Mysql 5.7 has gotten wiped out on that machine....so I can't attribute it 100% to the 7/11/18 Windows updates.

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

I have had these Microsoft updates installing automatically without issue for over 8 years so I guess we were due. Going forward I will start planning specific times to install these updates (i.e. early on a Saturday morning) so if there is a problem I can roll back. Probably should have been doing this anyway considering my system needs high availability during regular business hours.

That is exactly how I had mine set up. This was still not great when I awoke to phone calls about the server being down and the subsequent several HOURS long process of removing the updates and restarting. Not sure I would do that again. I am not sure what is the best method because we do want the security updates installed automatically because it would be problematic for me to "remember" to check for them.
