Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can you tell us what KBs were installed? Also, what port(s) are you running your WAS from? I dont think I've seen a single 2008/r2, 2012/r2 server with recent updates unaffected. The only outlier for exempt servers was running the WAS on a non-standard web port a la 81, 8080 or something.

      FWIW...

One of my apps is on a 2012 R2 server. Windows says it's up to date. Screenshot of the updates are below. Running standard WAS on version 5159-5132.

We are running on ports 81 - 94 through our providers load balancer. All is well here.

        Hi Selwyn,

The Avis Car Rental (my client) was 1 1/2 day down until we realized that all updates from July 11,2018 MUST be removed. They are having Windows 2012 and 2 servers and the second one is for backup. The owner told me that they cannot prevent forever the Windows updates to come again. They are looking forward for a solution on this un expected problem. All their 30 locations in north NJ were down.

        Thanks,

        Doron

Are you sure you are up-to-date?

These MS patches were released 7/10-7/11 on Patch Tuesday

According to your screenshot the last patch was installed 6/25/18.

If you're using a LB and those "non-standard" web ports you *may* be OK even if you install the latest patches, but I cant really say for certain.

Are you running IIS on the server in any capacity? For FTP, HTTP rewrite, redirect, et al?

Ok thanks Mike, just to be clear - sorry - you dont have IIS installed as a server Role/ Feature on the server at all? No Default IIS site running on port 80?

We run many WASs, but install IIS for a number of functions on servers running WAS only - not Alpha IIS.

Oh I see ...then yes. IIS is present on port 80 but I don't use it for anything. Alpha standard WAS is how my app runs.

I don't know. I've always just allow MS to automatically install updates. My server auto restarts Sunday mornings so that's usually when they are installed. I haven't uninstalled any updates either or ignored any.

I can confirm that if you use a non-standard web port the update has no effect on WAS.

WE have 6 small internal company applications running on a Win 7 machine. Running an older WAS build 2999. Using AlwaysUp. Mid day on 7/11/18, the WAS went down for no known reason. Rebooted the server which restored the WAS for about 30 minutes. AlwaysUp could not shut down the WAS. Couldn't manually start or shut down the WAS. Kept getting error messages.

Opened up Restore and went back to the 3am 7/11/18 restore point removing the automatic windows update. Disabled windows automatic update. Everything has been running fine since.

Note: we are not using port 80 for the WAS.
