Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Hi Darren, no argument from me. However, at this point it's about what YOU CAN DO.....rather than what you would HOPE TO DO. Try going down another path and see where it leads. Alpha Anywhere still provides a lot of tools to help you get there.

      The key words in your response are "YOU CAN DO". I cannot create a small app to handle the pdf's on Apple devices - that was the point of my reply, and in this case the "HOPE TO DO", printing an basic PDF on an Apple device is not asking a lot of Alpha. If they are going to market a Lo-No Code solution for web and mobile, it should work on 35-40% of all the mobile devices out there.

        I understand your frustration. Here is something to look at, although you may need help with the implimentation.

          Sean, do you have a sample UX you could post showing your implementation of pdf.js? That would sure help in putting together a solution for this issue.

            Hi David,

            No. I was just trying to find something outside of Alpha that could be used within Alpha....if that makes sense. I can try it but it will be a few days before I can get to it. It looks promising though.

              Ok, thanks... I thought you had used it.

              I've had a quick look and it's actually a wrapper named PSPDFKit that the website is selling. It wraps the open-source Mozilla pdf.js... adding functionality like Forms, Redaction, Comparison. What bothers me about it is that there is no pricing... it's a "contact sales" deal... and... their simple walk-through is wrong and only produces errors.

                  Keep us posted on that Darren if you can. This may be something we can take to Alpha and have them impliment since it's open source at it's core. Then there would be no need to use their wrapper or buy anything.

                  David, did you try it with their wrapper or just using pdf.js on it's own?

                    Re: iPad Woes - why does Apple have to be so difficult?

                    Once I saw their simple example was failing I didn't pursue their wrapper. Unless you need all that functionality for a PDF it doesn't make sense to use it. If you just want to display a PDF then the open source PDF.js is all you need. It seems to work in a web app running on an iPad... but still looking.

                      Are there any Alpha videos or tutorials that would show how to implement the PDF.js int a UX?

                        Thanks for responding and as always, for your expertise in so many of these issues. I am not sure I agree with you on this issue though, that a device, any device, should not be able to surf to a web site and download a PDF from it. I do that from my bank web sites, etc to my Ipad all the time. Maybe I am not understanding the point, but it seems to me this is different than a mobile app. It is just a web site and downloading a PDF should not be a problem. As I have said though, a5w_report_saveas does work. Heck, that is the way I did this on a previous app before Alpha built in ways to do it with little or no code.

                        I am still trying to figure out the filtering part though so if you or anyone has any help with that I would greatly appreciate it.
                        Gary, if you would post the code you're using to create and view your PDFs under iOS then I'll take a look and figure out the filtering part.

                          Hi David,

                          I am still trying to figure all this out. But here is the code:

                          'dim filter as c
                          'dim order as c
                          'Filter = ".T."
                          'Order = ""
                          'Dim filename as c

                          dim fn as c
                          fn = request.GetRequestTempFileName(".pdf")

                          fn = a5w_report_SaveAs(request.applicationRoot + "Patient_Phone_Directory.a5rpt","PDF","pracid='cbmpw' .and. prov='gt'","invert(fullname)",fn)

                          if file.exists(fn)
                          session.SaveDataAsFile("tempreport.pdf",file.to_blob(filename))
                          response.redirect(Session.FormatFileDataURL("tempreport.pdf"))
                          end if

                            Thanks Gary, interesting stuff.

                            I find that there is an error in the code... filename does not exist.

                            I'm trying to understand what's going on...

                            a5w_report_SaveAs creates a pdf
                            Then you take that file, turn it into a blob and save it as a file... either to disk or, if IIS, then in a session.state collection with a name of "tempreport.pdf".
                            Then you take that filename, and format it to retrieve that session file, and perform a response.redirect to that URL.

                            And this works to create the PDF and then display that PDF?

                            Are you running under IIS? What are you running this from... UX, Grid?

                              Hi David,

                              Yes it works.

                              Not running under IIS, just the standard WAS

                              I run it from an a5w page that can be called from a grid or ux or whatever.

                                You are correct.

                                I omitted a crucial line: filename=fn

                                Sorry about that.
