Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Desktop and Server keep stopping .... very annoying!

    Hi Guys .....

    Here's a conundrum ...

I am using Ver: 12.4.4.4 Build 4346 (have no need for an upgrade as I am retired ... supposedly! ... and just do bits and peices for myself and some local commuity projects and can't justify the additional expense now!) running on Windows 7 (with latest updates).

I have a development server I use to run a number of applications. Everything has been working fine until just recently. Now for no apparent reason both the desktop and server just stop. The only way to get them working again is to shut everything down and reboot. The desktop and server run for about 10 mins then frustratingly they stop again.

The only changes to the system (apart from regular Windows updates) is that I have upgraded from MS Offfice 2007 to MS Office 2016.

I have uninstalled Alpha (desktop and server) and cleanned the registry then resintalled Alpha and the same thing happens.

Would be grateful for some light being shed on the issue .... is there a confilct with Office 2016 or someting more sinister? What else can I do to resolve the issue?

    Thanks
    John

    Here's a quick update ....

Have had to reboot the system again! So .... am just running Alpha Desktop and Server. Have not started any MS Office applications and so far Alpha has not stopped ..... it's been running for 30 mins.

Is that indicative of a turf war with Office 2016 and Alpha?

Would really welcome some thoughts on what is possibly happening or what to look for and where.

Thanks for the heads up Ron .... Does sound like this may be the issue ... I'll give it a try and report back.

Quite right Ron .... This was the problem! I followed the advice in the this thread:

https://www.alphasoftware.com/alphaf...ication-Server as Ron suggested and now have Alpha working again although ...

... it leaves the question as to what to do about installing future Windows updates if there is a possibility that a Windows update may interfer with Alpha.

Thanks again for the pointer Ron.

Suggest most of the windows updates are needed. Maybe talk to alpha about keeping up with alpha side so they are not affected.

Dave, Microsoft broke the core TCP/IP functionality in Windows with their June updates and caused problems for all server software including IIS. Alpha dedicated a tremendous amount of resources in an attempt to come up with any viable work-around, but it was well out of our hands. What are you suggesting that Alpha could have or should have done differently?

Re: Desktop and Server keep stopping .... very annoying!

Hi Lenny, It has been over twenty years since I used windows anything for web or even Desktop beyond very simple stuff. I know we were privy to information then as a highly regarded company that let us know in advance of updates and such. Generally, we could test them and take care of potential problems ahead.

I just assumed alpha got those same heads up today?

Understand, PHP7 installs broke a whole lot of php apps when it came out as well, but only the ones where the programmer took shortcuts and/or was sloppy. Pretty well documented now and heads up were sent to most programmers.

Sorry if it appeared as a slight on alpha.

Also Microsoft trusts Linux in Azure( Azure Sphere). Asp.Net Core is for Linux today and so is SQL Server and you can install embedded Linux in Windows 10 if you want.
Also Alpha did have plans for Linux in Roadmap 2015 but has ended to asp.net plugin in IIS. All others are leaving and not recommend asp.net for anything new anymore and so does also Microsoft say.
