Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Server 2012 or 2016 for Shared Runtime App ?

We upgraded form v9 to v12 a few months back and also, upon recommendation of experts here, installed a shared version of the runtime on a windows 2016 server. We remote in with TSplus and it has been working flawlessly with no index or other issues.

The past few weeks the software started lagging and got very slow so we logged everyone out and thought doing a shutdown and reboot of the server might clear things up. Upon rebooting, something happened to the server software where it cannot find any of the desktops. We googled and think that an update may have caused the issue and none of the fixes work. We were able to pull the data off and get back up and running temporarily on a single desktop.

We now are going to reformat the drive and reinstall windows server. Was thinking about downgrading to windows server 2012 as it is suppose to be more stable. Any thoughts on this? Is alpha v12 compatible with server 2012?

Not sure if what happened was just a fluke, but need to find a way to avoid this situation as it is a major hassle. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I've used both Server 2012 and 2016 and Alpha Anywhere is compatible with both. I've found the only difference between the two, as far as Alpha Anywhere is concerned, is that Server 2016 requires Active Directory and Server 2012 doesn't. Use whichever suits your purposes.

If the only purpose of this server is to allow sharing Alpha desktop files, I'd recommend considering setting up a Windows 10 file server. We were having random issues with Windows Server and suspected it to be a hardware issue. We purchased a brand new server, installed a fresh version of the operating system and the same issues returned. Since switching to a file server, we've had zero issues.

We are running eight shadowed desktops for reference purposes.

We are installing the Alpha Anywhere on the server and everyone is remoting in and running on the server. I thought Alpha Anywhere needed Windows 10 and Server 2012 is based on Windows 8. Am I wrong on this?

Microsoft's mainstream support for Server 2012 ends in just about 2 months. We strongly recommend choosing the latest operating system available for the best support from the OS vendor once Alpha is officially supported on that platform.

Lenny, extended support goes another 5 years after that. Is that not enough? Is Alpha officially supported on Server 2016?

Server 2016 is a good OS. Even OS 2019 release is coming soon. MS is quickening their release schedules it seems and I think that is a very good thing.

One thing I can say about OS 2016 is test removing Windows Defender. It seems to be a good virus scanner, BUT with it has some serious performance impacts. It is installed as as default Feature. Just make sure you are running some sort of alternative A/V after removal. I've seen 2-3 second penalties on page load times before removing it and that is on servers running a boat load of RAM and CPU and SSD.

2012 and even 2012 R2 are getting long in the tooth, so I would not recommend them for a new server.

Windows server 2019 is coming out soon so better just skip version 2016 if no special need for it.

Thanks for all the input guys.

Based on all the recommendations we are going to stick with 2016. Just want something that is stable with as few problems as possible. Hopefully the last issue was a fluke.
