Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to rollback to previous Alpha release

Hello. Today I installed the latest Alpha release (Build 5221), only to experience several issues that didn't exist before: my PGB app still works under iOS but not on the Android platform where it just hangs up and all of my embedded reports throw a "run_action not permitted" error in the calling UX. The system has functioned flawlessly prior to this.

I see people posting that they "rolled back" to a previous Alpha version but I don't see where the option is to do that. I know I can go back to a previous backup of a component, but not an entire Alpha release. Also, can I do this with the App Server for IIS which I also upgraded today?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Re: How to rollback to previous Alpha release

Your PGB App was built with a specific version of Alpha... and so... the server hosting your published App UX must be the same version.

I believe you can simply re-install the version you need... development and server. When people say "rolled back" they really just mean re-installed a prior version. You can have many different development versions installed... each within their own folder.

If you used the Alpha Instant Update feature, you could upgrade your dev and server versions... and then re-build the app. I'm only suggesting this because then you may be able to go forward instead of backward... but that's a really big "may" due to newly introduced bugs. If you find that a pre-release solves your 5221 issues, you could move to that.

Finally, you need a test server setup. Remember that moving to any new release... official or pre... always introduces new bugs.

Thanks for your reply, David! To re-install a prior version, are you saying I can just rerun the previous patch executable?

Also, all day yesterday my mobile app worked fine on my iOS devices but got hung up on the first screen on my Android units, completely unresponsive. But mysteriously this morning the app is working fine on both the iOS and Android devices, without me having done any reinstalls or uploading any updates at all to my server or PG. Wondering if there could have been some type of PG or server issue preventing Android requests from being handled properly. Have you ever seen anything like that?

Thanks again for sharing your expertise!

Re: How to rollback to previous Alpha release

        I wouldn't re-patch. I'd run the full install.

It's virtually impossible to guess what might be going on with your Android app not working... and then working.

You do know that you're now working with App code that is at a different level than your server.

Thanks, David. I did upgrade my server to the latest Alpha App Server for IIS version as well as the latest Alpha dev and app server versions on my development machine...so I believe we are at the same level on each machine after I published to IIS yesterday...

Re: How to rollback to previous Alpha release

Right... but your App... your App as installed on a device... is running code from a prior release. Your App is built with, and contains Libraries from a prior release.

Unless... did you re-build your App?

Re: How to rollback to previous Alpha release

Oh, I see. Yes, I did rebuild my mobile app since it's just another UX within my overall web project. I believe you were the one who explained to me back in February how it all fits together. And it works perfectly having everything in one project. So, whenever I re-publish, the website and mobile app both get uploaded together. All I need to do then is rerun PGB and we are good to go. Without your help, I never would have realized I can actually run my mobile app from a browser with https://<MyWebsite>.com/<MyAppUX>.a5w...

              Thanks again!

Re: How to rollback to previous Alpha release

To uninstall alpha, use the Windows Start menu add/remove programs. You can run it multiple times, to uninstall the most current version of Alpha it find on your system, up until the Build where the Alpha un-install did not work. (Sorry, I don't recall at which Build the un-install was fixed.) I assume you have installed each Build of Alpha into its own folder by using the "full install" and specifying an install folder that included the Build Number, if you have not done that then I really suggest doing so in the future.

Un-installing Alpha for IIS does not work. So, I have no suggestion there.

I have never needed to un-install Alpha before re-installing it... either moving forward or backward. I simply use a full build and install to the same location as that build's original location.

Does anyone know of a reason to un-install Apha before re-installing a prior version?

I just did a full install of a previous version and the "System Addins" didn't roll back.

Before I install a new update it's my habit to backup my development folder(s) first. I've had instances where I update, then roll back, but not everything is as the way it was.

Depending on the environment where we are doing a new install we may choose to remove the previous install first. We have run into several issues on both the developer side as well as server side where only a removal, fresh install, and then a reboot would do the trick. As a side note, this is one reason I like the Alpha Cloud.

I've never had to do an uninstall, roll back patches sure, but uninstall, no.
