Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha Developer not working because of clock issue?????????

Re: Alpha Developer not working because of clock issue?????????

Some users have been getting Activation Errors and the error dialog indicated the the time on the machine is off.

This issue is now resolved. It was caused by the fact that our servers were synchronizing time to a time server that had stopped working. We are now using: time.nist.gov as our time server.

If you previously resolved the issue by manually setting the time on your machine back, you will need to set your machine to the correct time.

Re: Alpha Developer not working because of clock issue?????????

I Monday decided to install full_server_patch. I must say I was not surprised that again after installing update server went to demo mode. Not valid license available and time synch problem. However in servers general tab there was in plain text available valid license and also subscription details link confirmed that. Server in sync with time.nist.gov. Waiting 10 minutes nothing happens and then reboot and then little waiting and then server was again licensed.

I have used many different software. I have never used an other software which seems to has a feature to reject valid licenses reguarly.

        Kenneth,

Do you have screen shots of the specific errors you were getting. It would be helpful to know exactly what you encountered and at what points. Were you specifically told there was a problem with your system clock, or was there a general message saying that was one of the possible causes? Is your server running on a physical machine or a virtual machine? What build were you running after you patched? If you message me privately with your license number, I can review the activity from this end to see if it indicates any problems.

No I did not take any screen shots. But I can take next time. Lets say I am not confused anymore it has happen so often. Server runs now normally.

Edit: But it did went to demo mode nothing then happened then I did uninstall license then tried to activate. Then came sync error. Then I did restart virtual server. Then server after a while did get licensed.

Re: Alpha Developer not working because of clock issue?????????

As there are no known issues with activation, I will look forward to your screen shots so that we can better understand exactly what is going on in your case.

One thing to be aware of is that system clocks on virtual machines tend to be very inaccurate and have significant drift. Since you mentioned that you are using a virtual server, this is something to look at more closely. I have worked on customer systems that were configured to synchronize their system time to time.nist.gov or pool.ntp.org at the Windows level, which normally would be enough. However these systems also were having the clock maintained at the VM host level and with no direct control at the OS level. In these cases, the OS would sync and get the correct time, and then just a few moments later the clock would be reset to an incorrect time by the VM host. The Windows default for clock sync is weekly, so the clock would remain incorrect for the next 7 days.

I have now animated gif of the activation problem. It shows my license so I do not want to put it here. So were I send it.

To close the loop on this, Kenneth showed that his system clock was off by 2 hours when compared with time.nist.gov. When he addressed this disparity, activation was able to reliably succeed.

Sorry Lenny but you did get wrong conclusion. Your activation do not take account in Europe summer/ winter time. So at least half of year activation fails. Time.nist.gov shows wrong time...

This is called Daylight Savings Time, it is not unique to Europe, and there is a setting in your Windows clock to honor it. When set properly, activation will work all year long.

                        Yes that makes sense.

So the advice that time.gov and server time should be same is not true. It will just mislead user.

The advice is 100% true. Set daylight savings correctly, and the time on time.gov will match. If your daylight time setting is incorrect, and therefore your clock is incorrect, time.gov will not match your incorrect clock.

Now's a good time as any to say that it's high time that this thread is living on borrowed time because someone is behind the times. Saying the same thing time after time means you have time on your hands and even though it's your time-honoured tradition... it's only a matter of time.
