Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    defining form variable based upon set

    Hello,
    I am lost as I get an error message when I go and use selection Form/Variables/Layout variables and put

    search_by = "last_name"
    search_for = ""

    I get you have defined variables with illegal name. The following variable names are not valid: %txt%

    This works with forms that are not set based. What do I need to do different here to define a variable in a set based form?

    Secondly on this code below that uses the variables above if I do not enter any text in my search box another search window pops up prompting for search text, so how can I stop this which is in on push event. If I enter text all is well and works fine finding name or company.

    Code:
    SELECT
    	CASE Search_By.value = "Last_name"
    		topparent.index_set("Name")
    		topparent.find(search_for.value)
    	CASE	Search_By.value = "Company"
    		topparent.index_set("Company")
    		topparent.find(search_for.value)
    END SELECT

    'clear the value in search_for
    search_for = ""
    search_for.refresh()
    Thanks for any help!

    Re: defining form variable based upon set

    We'll have to see a sample of your database to diagnose the first issue. Looks like a standard knockoff of the AlphaSports customer information form variables except they are dimmed as shared/session there.

    For the second

    Code:
    if search_for.value > ""
    SELECT
    	CASE Search_By.value = "Last_name"
    		topparent.index_set("Name")
    		topparent.find(search_for.value)
    	CASE	Search_By.value = "Company"
    		topparent.index_set("Company")
    		topparent.find(search_for.value)
    END SELECT
    else
    end
    endif

    'clear the value in search_for
    search_for = ""
    search_for.refresh()
    There can be only one.

      Thanks Stan, that worked great as all your other suggestions!
      I found it was not the variable, but something else stupid I did on the form long ago and a change made that error show when I went to variables.
      I'm all set again.

      Thank you Stan!

        Re: defining form variable based upon set

        Hi Stan and everyone,
        On another form I noticed that it takes two clicks of search button to set the index/query to the proper index for the code used above.
        When I look at primary index query dropdown in alpha it does not go to name index on first search click and I get message conflicting expression data types because of this.
        Click ok and the index is still on record-number order not on the name index
        Click search again and it drops to name index and finds the record
        this is not happening until second click "topparent.index_set("Name")"
        If I put this statement on event on init topparent.index_set("Name") that name index is set and it finds the record first click no error message.
        Any thoughts of why or how to get the index set on first click to find record without an error?

        Thank you,
        Paul

          Re: defining form variable based upon set

          Since you are using a modification of the AlphaSports Customer information form (?) we should be able to diagnose better if you attach an export of your form we can import to AlphaSports. Right click on the form in question, Export Layout. We can import the layout and view it locally. Even if the fields and index names are different the code can be examined.

          The AlphaSports Customer information form does have the order set in the oninit so there is a default, not record order. (V11 version below).

          Code:
          dim shared vcSearchby as c
          vcSearchby = "Lastname"

          dim tbl as p
          tbl = table.current()
          tbl.order(vcSearchby,".t.")
          topparent.resynch()
          There can be only one.

            Re: defining form variable based upon set

            Okay, I will look at the Alpha Sports application. I didn't get it from there, but it was a demo application created by Alpha.
            I think it is probably old example.

            Is there a way of using IF at the start of the script to select name index in advance of the actual script so it is set like oninit

            I know the syntax i.e. script here is wrong below, just a basic thought as there are only two choices in script

            IF Search_By.value = "Last_name" THEN
            topparent.index_set("Name")
            else
            topparent.index_set("Company")
            end
            end if

            I have to go to my real job now, but will return in evening.
            retirement just down the road! I can see the runway finally!

            Thank you for all your help and pointers!

              If the default is to be ordered by name then you just need.

              topparent.index_set("Name") 'default order, probably never want to leave the order as record number
              IF Search_By.value = "Last_name" THEN
              topparent.index_set("Name") 'already done but doesn't hurt to execute again
              else
              topparent.index_set("Company")
              end
              end if
              There can be only one.
