Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Form CanExit Event Does Not Execute

    It has been a while since I have messed with a non-xdialog form but I am having a curious issue with a form's CanExit event. I have a form with the following code in CanExit:
    Code:
    msgbox("Can Exit", "Can Exit",UI_OK)
    The form is opened in a function as follows:
    Code:
    DIM Shared client_form as P
    DIM layout_name as c = "Client"

    client_form = :Form.load(layout_name,"dialog")

    client_form.new_record()
    client_form:Clientid.text = "C1000"
    client_form.show()
    When using the exit icon on the top right of the dialog, the CanExit event is not triggered. I need to use this to restrict the closing in certain instances and to do some data tests. I cannot put all of this in the forms buttons because this will still leave a back door for the tests to be bypassed using the exit icon. Does anyone know how to deal with this issue?
    Thanks,
    James

    Re: Form CanExit Event Does Not Execute

    As the example in the documentation shows, a user closing a form opened as dialog doesn't really close the form (triggering the canexit), they merely hide it.

    ' the user inputs values into the fields
    ' the user closes the form, but actually just hides it
    'now, really close the form
    frm.close()
    I would think the canexit event would fire if you add

    client_form.close()

    after the

    client_form.show().

      Stan, I originally had client_form.close() at the end but it still did not work. I removed it after I noticed that Alpha 5's action scripting code for opening a form excludes the close() method and ends in show(). I have done a bunch of other things to try and get it to execute to no avail. It just doesn't work as it should. However, if I open the form in design mode and preview it from there, it works.
      Thanks,
      James

        Re: Form CanExit Event Does Not Execute

        Yeah, I just did some testing.

        Under V11 the canexit event fires when the form is user closed.

        Under V12 - 5221-5152, the canexit event doesn't fire when the user closes. Also the user close also seems to remove the form from memory (actually closing it) and the frm.close() throws an error Argument is incorrect data type.

        Suggest you send a bug report.

          Stan, I also noticed while I was debugging this issue and still had the close() method in use that it was not allowing access to the pointer fields prior to close(). Example below:

          Code:
          client_form.show()

          msgbox("Client ID", client_form:Clientid.text)

          client_form.close()
          This suggests that the close icon is in fact closing the form instead of hiding it. Once again, documentation does not appear to be accurate.
          Thanks,
          James

            Stan, can you suggest a workaround? I'm not confident this will be resolved considering it does not affect their current web strategy. At least not in a timely manner.
            Thanks,

              Not true. If you provide a working example and they can duplicate the problem, it will get fixed. They are making changes internally to be compatible with a new version of dot net. So it's very important that these bugs be reported.

                  I can't think of a workaround. I added a close button but the canexit still didn't fire. Onactivate, ondeactivate don't fire. Oninit and onfetch do.

                    The problem has already been fixed in the pre-release build.
                    Thanks,
