Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha Desktop Build 5521

I have tried a few times to work with recent builds of Alpha Anywhere Desktop but have always had to roll back to and installation from 2016 for things to work ok.
I was having problems with a report design and decided I may need to update Alpha to the latest build to get over the design problems I'm having. This was a mistake as we are having many more problems.

When running an operation the Alpha window changes size.
When running a saved query the total of records found doesn't show as it used to in the right hand bottom corner, and instead of the default browse window, the browse changes name to Hardcard_DB_Browse followed by a number. When this happens it is hit and miss as to whether the toolbar works and we have to resort to using the menus at the top of the window instead. There are quite a few instabilities, sometimes the browse windows are greyed out and have to click into the control panel and then back into the browse screen for the grey to disappear?

Has anyone else had problems with the desktop version of Alpha (we have 2 licences and the same problems are happening on both PC's). We are operating Windows 10 pro. I hope this isn't a sign of the times and it's considered not worth the bother of sorting out the bugs for desktop applications?

    Re: Alpha Desktop Build 5521

As noted in a reply in this thread, Alpha is making internal changes to keep up with changes in dotnet.

I sympathize with Judith. I moved all the way back to July 2015 to a know better version. v12 4.3 2999. It is buggy too, but at least I know the bugs and there are fewer. Tried a few newer version with No joy. My issues are not as visual, but Variable issues and others do hurt. Reminds me of some things from V8 years ago when alpha fixed/enhanced something and broke 3-4 other ones.

We're running build 4491, addins 4932 from July of 2017. I haven't noticed too many crazy things happening.

            Re: Alpha Desktop Build 5521

Found this in the release notes:

            Alpha Anywhere V4.4.4 - Build 4346-4889 18-May-2017
NOTICE: Alpha Anywhere is now being built with Visual Studio 2015. Previously Alpha Anywhere was built using Visual Studio 2013.
.Net v4.6.2 - The Alpha Anywhere Installers now install .Net V4.6.2 if it has not previously been installed. Previously, the installers were installing v4.6.1
I was using 4584_4961 but then I was having issues with the shadow automatically updating. Also, when applying the patch to a previous version, the patch would hang at xbDebuggerClient.js.

I have just rolled back to build 4269_4867 which is prior to the change over to Visual Studio 2015 hoping everything will start to work normal again. My experience so far is that all the latest builds, including pre-release builds still have bugs.

              Re: Alpha Desktop Build 5521

Just as some more information for those also in this predicament. I too am suffering from all of the above issues with the most recent builds (shadows not updating, modal screens not working properly, toolbar issues, etc.). I was using Build 4770_5018 and things were mostly working but recent Windows 10 Pro updates have caused any reports with images in them to not print the images. I am going to try Ron's suggestion of using build 4269_4867 to see how things go.

Jeff, if you can, please let me know how 4269_4867 works for you. I have been using Alpha on the desktop since 1992. Started with A4V2. I have lost confidence in A5V12 on the desktop. Like you, way too many bugs. I have reported bugs and they have been fixed. But lately there have been so many bugs. Like you, shadows not updating, modal screens not working properly, toolbar issues, bugs in some of the developer tools, forms locking, etc.

                  Re: Alpha Desktop Build 5521

                  Hi Ron,

I just installed 4269_4867 on 3 work stations running my biggest app and it has seemingly solved all of the more glaring issues we were having. The biggest being the ability to print reports with images in them. At least that is the one the users barked about the most recently. :) I should mention that printing reports with images in them worked in 4770_5018 until a recent Windows 10 update. Anyway....I did a quick run through of some of the other "quirks" we were seeing in 4770_5018 and they are all seemingly good in 4269_4867. I appreciate your post in regard to that build.

I am all for Alpha updating .Net and staying "current". But, I am a little nervous given the number of Windows 10 updates that us desktop folks are going to get left behind since nearly all development for Alpha is on the web side of things. It feels like there will be a Windows update at some point that will prevent using this older version of AA. I just hope that is a long time in coming. I had tried running the most current build (5221) as of today and it really threw a wrench into some parts of my application (modal screens not functioning properly being a big one). The bummer is that the app is rather large so making any sort of change is no small task. I have contemplated trying to switch it to being web based but I am not sure I have the energy (or if customers would be willing to pay for the change). Like you....I really did not even know where to begin with sending a bug report because I had so many in 5221. One that was rather strange was that tabbing would not work if you had a logical field where you had it displayed as a checkbox.

Anyway....thanks again...I will give it a day or so to make sure nothing pops up - but I think I will then start migrating all work stations at my customers to 4269_4867.

                  Jeff
