Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Record Delete on Browse Not Working

    I have a modal browse that has a conditional button column before the first field that allows the user to edit and delete the current record. The delete button does not work. Below is the code with my variations commented out:

    Code:
    if event = "deleteCurrentEntry" then
       this.Set_Viewport_row(row)
       'this.allow_change(.t.)
       this.delete.record()
       'topparent.delete.record()
    end if
    Any thoughts on what is wrong?
    Thanks,
    James

    Code:
    if event = "deleteCurrentEntry" then
       this.Set_Viewport_row(row)
       'this.allow_change(.t.)
       this.delete_record()
       'topparent.delete_record() 'but this would delete the parent
    end if
    The <OBJECT>.DELETE() method deletes the named object from disk.

      Stan, topparent.delete_record() is what is suggested using the xbasic script genie. Using this does not delete the record. So how do I delete the current record? I did not think you were suggesting that I use the <Object>.Delete() method which is used to delete forms, browses, etc..
      Thanks,
      James

        Re: Record Delete on Browse Not Working

        Your code was written as

        this.delete.record() 'no such method exists

        not

        this.delete_record()

        I was also pointing out that if used

        topparent.delete.record()

        should have been

        'topparent.delete_record()

        but that line should delete the parent record, not the record in the browse.
        There can be only one.

          I corrected the issue by changing the code to the following. I still do not know why the delete_record() method is not working.

          Code:
          if event = "deleteCurrentEntry" then
             this.Set_Viewport_row(row)
             dim tbl as P
             tbl = table.current()
             tbl.change_begin()
             tbl.delete()
             tbl.change_end(.T.)
          end if
          Thanks,
          James

            Re: Record Delete on Browse Not Working

            Stan thanks for your quick reply. I am a little confused when you said that topparent.delete_record() would delete the parent record, not the record in the browse. The record in the browse is the parent record or are you saying that I would have to put the button outside of the browse column and the browse object to get it to function correctly. It has only been about a decade since I have used a browse as I do most of my work on the web component and xdialog side of Alpha. Needless to say, I am a little rusty on the traditional forms and browses.

            Thanks for your insight.
            Thanks,
            James

              Re: Record Delete on Browse Not Working

              My assumption was that the browse represented a child table of a set. As such topparent.delete_record() should delete the current parent record and a button in a browse column with this.delete_record() should delete the selected child table record. If the assumption was wrong then the advice was wrong. Some use a browse of the table on a form based on a table for navigation/visibility of more than one record.

              I'm not sure what a modal browse is so it may be that you needed to use this.allow_change(.t.) for the this.delete_record() to function.

                Re: Record Delete on Browse Not Working

                Stan, it was not a child table. I did try your suggestion using the allow_change(.t.) method to no avail. Even though it has been a long time for me dealing with browses and forms, I thought the delete_record() method was a shortcut for having to code what ultimately ended up working above. In other words, if your data entry mode for the browse is "modal", which it is, the delete_record() method automatically begins a change, deletes the record, ends the change, and returns the browse to modal.

                It is possible this is a bug and I will report just in case.
                Thanks,
                James

                    Yes. When all else fails, the good old system send keys could solve the problem. I have not tried in this particular case since I did successfully delete the record using table.delete() method. I will post the results of the bug I submitted as soon as Alpha gets back to me.

                    Thanks for your help.

                      Re: Record Delete on Browse Not Working

                      So I have just tested this because I use tbl.record_delete() all the time. The issue is calling the change_begin(), you do not call that when you use record_delete(). I added change_begin() and change_end(.T.) to one of my scripts and it no longer worked. Not sure why this happens, but if you want to use record_delete() just exclude the change function and it should work fine.

                        Re: Record Delete on Browse Not Working

                        Thanks to everyone for their responses. With no changes to my browse and only a reboot to my system, my original usage of "this.delete_record()" now works. Not sure why the issue existed in the first place but all is good.
                        Thanks,
