Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Problems Updating from V11 to V12

I am finally working on updating our desktop application from V11 to V12/Anywhere v4.5.4.5 (Desktop Only). This application originated in the DOS days and has been through virtually every version of Alpha.

I've run into/fixed a couple of issues but running into one that has stopped me cold.

The Operations tab in the Control Panel seems to be having issues:

    1. Many of the icons next to the operations names are missing.
    2. Nothing happens when I try to manually run those I have tried.

I can provide more details, but first figure it best to ask the obvious: Are there some known issues or operations that need to be done when updating?

    Many thanks.

You don't say what build of v12 you are using.
    Look at this:

    Also: please submit bug reports.
    Alpha 5 Version 11
AA Build 2999, Build 4269, Current Build
    DBF's and MySql
Desktop, Web on the Desktop and WEB

      Thanks Ronald,

      Sorry for omitting that part.

Prior to starting the migration, I updated to current the current build 5152_5221

After submitting my post I did some research and found the threads about builds since Alpha's Visual Studios / dotnet updates having issues.

It sounds like I should roll back to 4269_4867 as a starting point in v12 to confirm stability up until that point then slowly move forward and submit bug reports as appropriate.

      Thanks

Also, be sure the tables related to the operations show up in the control panel - otherwise click the green plus and add all

Re: Problems Updating from V11 to V12

So what are the benefits of V12 over V11 other than maintenance or lifespan?
Serious question as for DT I really struggle to find a compelling reason to upgrade.
Given the number of rollbacks due to bugs I have held off upgrading.

Re: Problems Updating from V11 to V12

@Ted Giles, I'm starting to wonder the same thing. I've paid for updates for the past few years and never got around to doing the migrations. Just hoping that doing the upgrade would help cover my investment.

Further research on the issue initially brought up in this thread determined that only the Append and Query operations were missing icons. Furthermore, right-clicking and running them (vs just double clicking) has worked on those I've tested.

I submitted a bug report as suggested.

Still planning to regress to an earlier build unless I stumble across some sort of list/documentation/discussion of broad things that work/don't work after the visual studios / dot net update.

Re: Problems Updating from V11 to V12

              Ted,

One major benefit of V12 desktop is that the edit browse bug introduced in a late V11 update that causes alpha to jump around when you edit a record in a browse is fixed.

You also gets lots of good stuff if you use web components on the desktop and some new functions that may/may not be of use to you.

It's difficult to think of anyuthing else, but a read of the release notes may shed some light.

                Thanks Jon.
I was aware of the browse issue so I used dbl click to open a dedicated form for the record.
As for Web stuff I have a different product which is Web only rather than a combination. IMHO they should have split DT and Web years ago.

Re: Problems Updating from V11 to V12

I have one browse my customers rely on heavily, where opening a form for each change would be extremely time consuming. I managed to rewrite this as a grid component in V11 after many hours of hard work & head scratching only to find Alpha fixed the bug in V12.

What happens if you build a browse in v10.5 and import it to V11 I wonder? Think I'll try it.
