Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

File Upload using IIS not working

    Hi all,

I've built a lot with Alpha but I'm working on my first IIS project. Everything is working as expected except file uploads--whether from dialogs, grids, detail views... I'm trying to upload to a folder defined as [PathAlias.FilePath]\ClientDocuments, and I've defined that alias in the project profile. I've made sure that the websecurity allows access to the folder. I've looked at IIS settings to see if there was anything (obvious) there blocking it.

In a Grid, I'm just getting a 500 server error without any other information. In a dialog, I'm getting "Error executing event 'afterDialogValidate ': Script:a5DialogHelper_Execute_CRUD_Statements() line:2527 Access is denied."

I'm betting this is some kind of setting or that I should build something slightly differently for IIS or something, but I've been trying everything I can think of all day without any luck. Does anyone know where the magic switch is that I'm missing?

    Thanks in advance.

    Chris,

It comes to mind that I had similar issue when trying to using paths with a mapped drive name instead of universal naming convention (UNC).
Could it be that your PathAlias is defined as something like D:\MyFolder\ rather than UNC like \\servername\volume\MyFolder ?

      From the IIS Migration Documentation:

This difference will most notably affect file/folder access. An application pool will be set to run as "Application Pool Identity" by default. This means that IIS will create a virtual account and this account has minimal access. It will have access to read and execute from the web root and have access write to a temporary folder. If an application writes to the web root, to folders outside of web root, reads files outside of the web root the application will be denied access to those folders under IIS. The virtual account must be given the needed access to these other folders, or the application needs to be changed to do the work in a different way.
You may also want to look into using Storage Connections.

Thanks to you both. I think the IIS access is the problem.

But after digging around a bit, I'm not sure how to actually do this part: "The virtual account must be given the needed access to these other folders". I understand this conceptually and I understand the naming convention of the virtual account, but how do I actually "[give[ the needed access to these other folders"?

Okay, so I went to the file directory > Properties > Security and added my application pool as a user and gave it access to the directory and subdirectories, but still no access. The documentation is a bit confusing to me--so in the Application Pool settings, does the Process Model > Identity need to be ApplicationPoolIdentity and the Process Model > Load User Profile be "True"?

Chris, I admit to not fully understanding it all myself but I have that set to false and the identity to a user with access to read/write files on the server.

              Thanks Stephen.

So at this point, I actually have the upload working! I'm uploading successfully to a directory outside the webroot, which is what I want. Now the problem is retrieving those files--I've historically just retrieved files from within the webroot. I found this (https://documentation.alphasoftware....%20Webroot.xml) and have an a5w page that loads okay but doesn't load the file. I've looked through documentation but no luck so far. What's the code for an a5w page that "opens the file and sends it to the browser"?

I take a different approach, I store files on a separate file server (outside the webroot) and store the reference UNC file path in a SQL database.
In Alpha I handle it as a 2 step process, first I get the referenced file path from the database, then I use that for the file download itself.

                Populate Download Path.jpg

                File Download.jpg

What did you do to resolve the Upload part?

Re: File Upload using IIS not working

I'm not totally sure what resolved the upload part, but I think part of it (along with the other things we discussed along the way today) might have been that I was sometimes setting the Application Pool Defaults and it didn't affect the already-created Application Pool.

I got the download working too, but is there any way to load the file in the browser? When I work within the root directory, files like images and PDFs can be loaded into a div or tabbed UI tab, etc, instead of downloaded. I thought I'd try the other method in the link I shared earlier, which I think puts the file in a session folder in the webroot, but I don't know where the session folders are using IIS... This IIS thing is proving challenging to get my head around...
