Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    MYSQL 8.0 Support

My understanding from a previous post (which I can't seem to find) is that Alpha does not currently work with MySQL 5.8.

I am wondering if there is a plan to bring on support or a timeframe for doing so. I will be moving an application to a new server soon and I want to migrate to the latest MYSQL version that I can when I do so.

You can during install choose to use previous versions authentication.

So only it's an authentication issue? If I install 5.8 and choose that authentication method, Alpha won't know the difference and everything will work fine?

World is not perfect so -everything will work fine- is little overwhelming phrase when talking about coding.

          Let me rephrase.

Have you or one of your clients been using 5.8 with Alpha without any insurmountable issues that are directly related to using 5.8 instead of 5.7?

No. Is there some reason that there should be.

              Re: MYSQL 5.8 Support

I'm not sure I'm reading this thread correctly. Apart from the fact that there is no MySQL 5.8, the assumption can be that you both mean 8.0.

There is an intimation that 8.0 be used with 5.7 authentication.
A clarification is requested... has this been tried?
The response is that it has not be tried.

If this summary is correct... how can the information posted be useful?

BTW, here's the other post that talks about 8.0.

Yes, sorry, I mean MYSQL 8.0. I am trying to find out if there will be support for it or not, and when.

Unless Alpha chimes in on this thread, no one here could answer that. You'd need to ask Alpha directly.

                    It works just fine.
But with components isn't the case always that when problems you always have to wait Alpha to chimes in.

I heard back from Alpha - MySQL 8 will work as Kkfin suggested. You have to choose the older authentication method when you install it, or install a special driver. (The ADO.NET provider.) If you choose MYSQL 8 for your connection string in Alpha, a message pops up letting you know about the issue. (I don't know what version of Alpha developer that message starts showing up in though, so your results may vary.)

Thanks for confirming. Is there something in MySQL 8.0 that you need?

                          Re: MYSQL 8.0 Support

I am setting up a brand new server - might as well upgrade to the latest version of MySQL at the same time, no? (The server I am upgrading is currently running 5.6 - so I'm either moving to 5.7 or 8.)

Might as well, depending on the use for the server. I'd install both 5.7 and 8.0. As far as I know, no one is running 8.0 with Alpha. 8.0 was released in April this year so no definitive testing has been done with Alpha... or by Alpha. You're probably not going to use any of the new 8.0 features and Alpha won't have support for them anyway. But, I'd put it in and try it as long as I had a backup 5.7 to run... just in case. If it's for a client then I'd certainly make sure they understand that it's brand new and untested.

In their response to me, Alpha says they have customers using 8. Not sure how much it's being used, but it sounds like it IS being used.
