Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Form suddenly will not open

All of a sudden form will not open. No change Alpha shuts down as soon as try to open form. Default form opens. Compact done, index

Re: Form suddenly will not open

You likely have a corrupted form. Can you get it open in design mode? Another thought - any changes to field rules, especially check lookup tables for changes.

      Can open in design mode.
      No changes made
      Field rules show no errors.
Tried rolling back to previous form & still the same

Well at least you can open it in design mode. Except for browses, you can copy the layout elements onto a new form and see if that form works ok.

It could be a numer of things - memory corruption for one. Have you tried rebooting your machine?

2 (very similar) forms will not open of the 7 forms on this set. The other 5 forms open without any problems.
Tried copying a few fields on to a new form and the new form would not open / just crash out of Alpha.
          Thanks

Fixed it. Created new form, adding fields from original form in small batches. Offending field was a set defined calculated field, I had changed. It was a case() statement to which I added one too many conditions - split into two.
            Thanks for the help

Glad you found it. Sometimes a change will 'work' the first time or two before an error is triggered. Which can be very misleading when debugging a form that seemed to be working. Which is what I have spent my Sunday doing...

I'm having a similar problem I think. After doing the latest update when my cursor gets to any fields that have a lookup to another database it crashes to a white screen. Only way out is ctrl alt del. Is there a way to determine what is corrupted? For now I had an older version I loaded (build 5221 for runtime) and it appears to work. Still need to fix the latest update though.

                  Hi Robert,
Check the field rule lookups and the indexes. You probably have a typo somewhere from a change you forgot you made. Check if an earlier version of the form still works before you start over from scratch. If you turned off a field rule lookup without deleting all the specs first, you may find that Alpha is still trying to use it.

Thank you Robin. Actually Selwyn replied to a bug report I submitted. I sent him some zip files and he was able to create and see the same error which thought he'd be able to repair shortly in the next update. He was very responsive which was great! I've reloaded an older version for now and it is working again.

I don't suppose he gave you the script - for those of us who won't get that update? He might if you ask him...

I'm expecting an overall update for all to receive....but I'm not sure. I'll let you know when he sends fix. I suspect others will have the same issue I had.

Ok so the latest update cured my issue that the previous update had messed up. Regarding your desire for a script....shouldn't be necessary as nothing should have broken for you if you can't get updates....so you shouldn't have anything to fix.

                              Hello Terry.

I had the same experience after loading the latest version. What it turned out to be is that the Action Script code for opening a form no longer works. I had to remove everything from that code except for the Dim lines and the one line that actually opens the form. The Action Script code to check form status now causes everything to come to a halt.
