Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Executing a .bat file

I would like to be able to click on a Action Button on a grid and have it execute a .bat file.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Look at the xbasic function sys_shell_wait

That will allow you to run a batch file.

See this recent thread on sys_shell_wait: Does sys_shell work on mac os

You will not be able to execute a .bat file on the client computer that is accessing your application through a browser. This is a security constraint of any browser-based application, and the limitation is there for very good reasons.

I guess I was interpreting his request as executing a bat file on the server, but I can see that might not be the case here.

          Re: Executing a .bat file

So is there a way to be able to execute a .bat file when you access the application via a browser?

The real objective is to execute a .dtsx package. My thinking was to create a .bat file with the command line command that executes the .dtsx package.

            Re: Executing a .bat file

Actually the .bat file exists on the C:\ of the database server. I'm trying to execute a .dtsx package against a SQL database. If I were able to "call" the .bat file that resides on the C:\ drive via XBasic by clicking an Action Button, this gives the user the ability to execute the .dtsx package themselves rather than contacting IT to execute it.

If my reasoning is flawed, I will not take offense with other suggestions...

You can execute a file on the alpha server through the browser.

                Re: Executing a .bat file

So is it something as simple as defining an XBasic function, assigning that function to the Action Button, and inside the XBasic function putting the sys_shell_wait command?

                Example:

                SYS_SHELL_WAIT("C:\dtsx.bat")

                  Pretty much, yes.

Depending on how your server permissions are setup, you might have to do:

                  SYS_SHELL_WAIT("C:\a5webroot\dtsx.bat")

Or, if Alpha is being funny about the "" which it sometimes sees as an escape character

                  SYS_SHELL_WAIT("C:\\a5webroot\\dtsx.bat")

Only one way to find out, right?

Very true. Time to give it a whirl...

Thanks for all your help. Much appreciated

                      Re: Executing a .bat file

I have done it and even TRIED to get the .bat to launch Access on the server in order to print a report from it. Although running non-user interface shell commands work, it will not work if you are trying to launch something like Access that seems to need to launch a user interface.

With a little thinking out of the box though, I finally did get it to work (ie. opening and printing an Access report on the server).
The command I use actually calls the windows task scheduler to immediately run a task that I set up. The task runs Access with the machine's Admin account (instead of the IIS server special user) and Access pops right open on the server and prints out the report.

                      Edit:
On the Xbasic side, I used this to launch the windows task:

                      commandToLaunch = "SCHTASKS /RUN /TN "LaunchInventoryProd""
                      sp = Helper::ShellProcess::Create(commandToLaunch)
