    Default Alpha Anywhere?

    I was recently brought back on with a company I have worked for doing PLC programming in the past, and they have asked me to use the Alpha Anywhere suite to rebuild their website and create some mobile applications for use by their field technicians. I have some very limited programming knowledge, mostly HTML, but am beginning to pick up on how Java and XBasic work while running through tutorials with the AA software.

    Does anyone here have any experience with this specific software or their former suite Alpha Five? Any tips on how to get up to speed on the software quickly? Any anecdotes, tips, etc would be extremely helpful.

    My advice would be to use list controls almost exclusively. What version/release do you have?

    I found the best way to learn is to begin developing. Solving real world problems accelerates the process. I was assisted by Alpha mentoring, forums and Selywn's videos. I do have a programming background deploying customized MS Access applications, but had no web or mobile programming experience prior to Alpha. I have deployed a schedule check in/out app, expense app, job delivery confirmation app, executive purchase order approval app and currently working on a dispatch ticket system. Another important part of development is anticipating the things your clients don't tell you. Lastly, no software platform is perfect, but Alpha's support has been very good to me. My apps have a user base of around 200 to 250 and I have received good feedback. I don't train or rely on users to read documentation. If users can't figure it out easily, the apps won't be well received. My motto for mobile development is simply "less is more."

    In light of your inexperience with Alpha Anywhere/Alpha Five, you might want to consider Alpha Transform.
    Alpha Transform is designed for fast implementation as well as getting data to and from people in the field.

    You refereced Java along with Alpha. Alpha uses JS, not Java.

    Java is a separate language. JS= JavaScript!

    I don't use Alpha for web stuff just DT.
    However, I do develop Mobile and Off line stuff which us very client specific.
    There is a world of pain awaiting when developing the mobile side, so I would split the job.
    Web site, web app, mobile app.
    That will be easier to learn AA with the first 2.
    Then, don't bother building your own torture chamber, use Alpha Transform. It is truly amazing, easy and robust.

    Nah! I used to be Santa in our town.
    My pillow on hooks over my shoulders slipped and it looked like I was just another tubby guy with a beard.

    @Ted
    Hi Ted, just out of curiousity are you using AA to develop your Off-line mobile apps?
