Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    xDialog Possibilities v12

Is it possible to create an xDialog with the following characteristics:

    • x% of the left side of the dialog is a container that holds a menu or series of buttons.
    • The left container is followed by a vertical line with an icon in the center that allows you to collapse the section leaving the vertical line and icon for later expansion.
    • I am familiar with vertical and horizontal sliders but what I am looking for is different.

If anyone has any examples on how to accomplish this, it would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    James

Check out frames for the buttons and embedded dialogs and conditional objects in Learning Xdialog. I would start with several test xd's for each of the elements before trying to put them together... Are you trying to make a menu?

Robin, thanks for the reply. My standard procedure for making a UI for my desktop applications is to use the tabbed UI builder in web components and convert this to xDialog. What I get is an application shell with a collapsible menu bar on the left. I am trying to duplicate this functionality without using any type of web component as a starting point. My main issue that resulted in my original question was how to design this using only xDialog. I am leaning towards creating an xDialog that utilizes conditional objects and embedded dialogs to create the same effect. The collapsible menu section on the left would be designed in javascript and will control the dialog that appears on the section to the right.

I can't imagine this has not been done before by someone else. As such, if anyone has an example of this "application shell" that I can use as a starting point, that would be great. If there is another way to accomplish this using only xDialog, I welcome any suggestions.
      Thanks,
      James

I must be missing something - you don't want a web component but you do expect to use javascript to control a non-web component? I have no idea how that would work, sorry. Maybe someone else will have an idea for you.

        hmmmm
Do you have a screenshot of what the XD produced with the web component looks like?

          Hi all,
Robin, I believe it was you that gave me the coolest roll-up-roll down dialog for table-fields-indexes, etc., which is now a mainstay of my development scripts. I don't see that what is being asked for here is nothing more than the same scripting with the only difference being that other than being a roll-up event action it is a conditional close of "left" panel and positioning the dialog where needed. It seems very doable with the same code process, don't you think?

I thought so too, but wanted to see what exactly he had in mind first. Perhaps he will come back...
