Default Is there a way to view PDF on Ipad in a normal web application?

I believe this has been asked before, but I cannot find an answer. Can PDF's be viewed/downloaded to IPAD?

You believe right... I believe you asked it.

The short answer is yes... PDF's can be viewed on an iPad within a Web App.

There are a lot of specifics you've not provided that may dictate otherwise. Where is your PDF? How are you getting your PDF?

E.g. I have a PDF stored in S3. The Action Javascript "Open an .a5w page, static HTML page, URL, or PDF document..." will open that S3 PDF for viewing on an iPad.

    Hi David,

I cannot view any PDF's on ipad - alpha reports do not display (and they are pdf's), and PDF files on my server are not downloading either. I have googled this topic too, and there seems to be lots of issues with PDF's on IOS. I am having no problems on laptop, or any droid device, just on IOS devices. Is there a work around for this?

    Gary,

You could probably use HTML reports w/o issue on iOS. But I know, if you have a 1000 reports already built, that's a non-starter.

Actually, let me revise what I said above. PDF's and Alpha reports do display on IOS, but only the first page.

    Peter,

That does work on ipad, but not ideal for users of other devices that prefer PDF. And also does not solve the problem of viewing other PDFs (other than alpha reports)

Ok... thanks... now we have some detail.

This is one of those areas in Alpha where there are a bucket of options, but it ends of being a mis-mash of features that may or may not work depending upon what you want to do... and even then it's confusing. For example... using the Action "Open an .a5w..." you can specify the target to be a browser window. Doing this you can open a PDF with multiple pages.

However, open a report as a PDF there is no option for a browser window... so you can only view 1 page. I don't think there's another target option that will help.

The only way to have full control over your PDF's under iOS is to use PhoneGap Build and use the plugin to open native documents. This is actually specified in the "Open an .a5w" Action with a link that reads "Opening PDF documents on mobile devices".

I believe this is why the HTML option for reports was added... because PDF on mobile devices are a mess unless you use PGB.

    Hi David,

I just tested an older application on ipad, and reports run fine and include all pages, but this was not done with alpha's report genie, but with the report.saveas method.

    So I have 2 questions:

    1. is there any reason I should not use this report.saveas (Or really the a5w_report_saveas) in my SQL application?

    2. if report.saveas works because it directs the output to the browser, wouldnt it make sense that this should be an option within alpha's genie, i..e, being able to specify that output goes to the browser (so that it works on IOS)?

    1. If it works, then why not use it?
    2. There is no sense when it comes to trying to make sense out of Alpha features and options... there isn't any.

You've not shown code for running report.saveas. I can't see that it works for showing a PDF in a web browser or iOS. The option for actually showing the file does not exist under a5w_report_saveas. a5w_report_saveas does not show within XBasic autocomplete... only a5w_report_pdf shows... but there is no doc for a5w_report_pdf. Classic Alpha.

I open PDFs from an iPad. When first opened they display the first page. Hold a finger down until a pop-up menus appears and select Open Image or Open Image in new tab, and it opens with all pages. I use Chrome. Doesn’t work in safari.

    Hi Ron,

I had to abandon the effort for now because of other commitments. But no, I have not fully resolved this, but report.saveas seems promising.
