Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Time Difference Calculation

    Hi Guys.
    Ive been struggling with what seems to be a simple time calculation
    I have two fields (both short time) TimeRec and TimeON
    i need to set up a calculated field that is essentially TimeON - TimeRec = (which would then show the minutes and seconds of the difference)

    This seems to be something that should be simple but i cant seem to get it working.

    Thanks for any help
    Roland

    Re: Time Difference Calculation

    Hi Roland,

    In this case, TimeON - TimeRec would return the time difference in seconds.
    I don't know if you are planning to display the time difference or use the difference for
    some other purpose.
    Code:
    timeRec ={09:00}
    timeOn = {09:15:24}
    ?timeOn - timeRec
    = 924
    ?int((timeOn - timeRec)/60)+" Minutes"+mod((timeOn - timeRec),60)+" Seconds"
    = "15 Minutes24 Seconds"

      Re: Time Difference Calculation

      Where are you getting your TimeRec and TimeON values?
      Are they currently strings?
      They are in the format HH:mm?
      Where do you want to do your calculation... Client-side or Server-side?
      What format do you want the results in... Short Time... HH:mm?

      If both your starting values are Short Time - HH:mm, then you can't get a calculation with seconds... you don't have any to start with. You can only show a difference of hours and minutes.

      What build of Alpha are you using?

        Re: Time Difference Calculation

        Thanks guys.
        David,
        Build is 5756
        Would prefer to do the cal on the client side.
        Getting the values as short time. Actually using some code you helped with years ago. Push button to get current time and format as a string hh:mm. both fields are set as short time.
        Im very happy to just get the difference in mins for this one.

          Re: Time Difference Calculation

          This works for what you've described...

          Code:
          var timeOn = {dialog.Object}.getValue('TimeOn');
          var timeRec = {dialog.Object}.getValue('TimeRec');

          var tOn = new Date();
          tOn.fromFormat(timeOn,'0h:0m');

          var tRec = new Date();
          tRec.fromFormat(timeRec,'0h:0m');

          var tDiff = new Date();
          tDiff = (tOn - tRec) / 1000;

          var diffHours = Math.floor(tDiff / 3600) %24;
          tDiff -= diffHours * 3600;
          var diffMins = Math.floor(tDiff / 60) % 60;

          var timeDiff = diffHours + ":" + diffMins;

          {dialog.Object}.setValue('TimeDiff',timeDiff);

            That worked perfectly.

              I need to do something like this, but I don't know how to get it to work on the calculated field expression of that particular field (in this example it would be the timeDiff field). Can anyone direct me?

                Hi Brad,
                So much has changed during the last 4.5ish years.
                Give a little more detail of your situation.

                  I have a BeginTime field and an EndTime field on a timecard. I'm trying to calculate the difference to get the total hours (Hours field). It was working when I was using dbf tables (using field rules), but I converted to MySQL and had to re-do my timecard grid. Now I have to use javascript and do it on the grid (I'm assuming). I also assume I have to do it on the Hours field at the calculated field expression property (see picture below).

                  It's not as simple as endtime minus starttime, so I looked up and found your code here on this thread. Unfortunately, I don't know how to get that code into a calculated field expression that will be accepted and do the math.

                    You can actually do this in mysql, and it's as simple as timediff(endtime,begintime).
                    I don't know how detailed your table is, but I do this day in and day out.

                    Feel free to email ([email protected]) or call (608)345-2697 if you need more help.

                      Thanks so much. I'll research it. It's probably more reliable in mysql than through the grid.
