Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help sending html email

I have been using Alpha since v5. I am now using Alpha Anywhere with the latest patch - build 5667_5254

I am not a developer or programmer, just a business man with an adequate knowledge of xbasic for my own needs.

I have developed a very workable and fairly complex database for my company and have no problem sending email using email_client_external().

I would like to improve the appearance of the emails with html content. I send personal emails to a particular client, not bulk emailing.

I can't find anything in the help documentation that offers any real direction or instruction

    Please help
    David Montgomery

    Try this.
Look for the online AA documentation.
    Search Email
    See Html instructions.
    See our Hybrid Option here;

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

Ted, thank you for your response.

I've read that several times. Can't seem to make it work.

Considering Constant Contact, but it appears they are for bulk mailing. I need to send personalized emails to individual clients.

Any further advice would be greatly appreciated!

        David,

Open up about exactly what you're trying to accomplish.
Provide examples of what you've tried as well as sample data
(I understand most people are dealing with confidential data, but
that doesn't mean they can't "sanitize" it for help.

These few simple steps will go a long way towards getting an
answer that is more helpful than "rtfm".

@David. It's Easter break over here so I will get a chance to try the rtfm solution as Greg so nicely puts it, Tuesday.
@Greg. Now we have established that rtfm is either unclear of unworkable, we can explore.
I don't think David needs to send anything, we just need to work out how to show html content, presumably special text and images, in an email developed using Alpha.

            Hey Ted,

I am pretty sure I suggested supplying more information so that we could respond with something other than "rtfm".
I sincerely believe that everyone makes an attempt to rtfm before posting questions here, but either can't find the
topic in the manual, or can't generate a solution provided by the information in the manual.

            David,
I send html emails all the time using alpha products.
I suggested sharing code and sanitized data so that we (even me sometimes) have a better chance of seeing
            where you're having issues.

Why not just send David an email template with images and special text/colour etc so he can pull it apart and try it?

                There's too many unknowns.
You and I know the manual actually describes things pretty good for this topic.
That leads me to believe there is something wrong in the implementation.

A person learns far more from corrected mistakes than given answers.

David, you are changing the Message Type to HTML aren't you?
The options are Plain or HTML

Suggest you try creating an email, changing the Message Type and when you fire up the email, you have the option to insert text/picks etc.

There's always the parts that people seem to forget about.
I ask for code because it often shows the problem even if I missed part
of it during my initial read.

I don't know how you are passing the html code through to the email, but
I suspect (without any proof) that you are most likely trying to send
some kind of attachment, which according to the documentation, will
disable the html appearance being sought.
