Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Printing Word RTF format report-thousands of pages print

I'm working on a report, based on a set. The report has a detail section. I'm about halfway through laying it out, and wanted to test what I have so far. I entered a dummy record in the form (based on the same set as the report), double click on the report, and it looks pretty good. I then add a simple print button - the report will have to be produced in Word format to account for situations I can't anticipate. It generates the first page of the RTF file as gibberish, followed by 2700 pages of single characters in a huge font. I haven't written any sort of "real" code to print to RTF yet, just testing, but this is not encouraging. See attached for visual backup.

This isn't the answer, but can you try the following?
I am presuming that the fields on the form are Rich Text and that they contain the data you want printed.

On the form with the Print Button, try setting it to Preview, not Print.
Create the Preview Button using Action Scripting.

Navigate to the record and Preview by pressing the button you just created.

Now choose the option to save it in a RTF format.
    View it.

Next, try a print from the top menu bar.

If all is well, it's your code at fault.
If not, please upload a sanitized set and your code so we can look at it.

You can actually embed a Print Button in the report if you wish, as you would on a form.

Thanks Ted, I appreciate it. I've done some more testing and the problem seems to be the link to Word. The report previews perfectly. The report prints perfectly to PDF. If I open the program using the Runtime version, it formats (mostly) correctly in RTF. When I go back to the developer version, I get gibberish.

Then, I tried a different report that I've always used previously in PDF format, and sure enough, I get the same type of gibberish when I print it to RTF.

I guess I could save in PDF, then convert to a Word doc, but shouldn't have to. Any suggestions?

If you care to send me a copy of where you are at,
        [email protected]
I'll be happy to see if I can fix it, no guarantees but it's easier when I have stuff in front of me.
You data will be safe anyway, but a sanitised version would be better.
        Your call.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I had to turn my attention to my day job! I found the problem, though. Any report that I print to RTF is doing the same thing, it's not just the one I'm working on. It's printing in a font size 900+. If I open the document in Word, select all, and change the font size to something reasonable like 12, the report is fine. I haven't found a setting in Alpha to change this...any ideas?

Suggest you install Libre Office - free alternative to Word - and see if the same thing happens.
