Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha5.alx file

I have made a field rules change in my database. Just after the save I have noticed a Alpha5.ALX file on my desktop. Can this be deleted? Is it similar to a .TMP file?

    Re: Alpha5.alx file

Best not to. It is a reference file which will need to be rebuilt if not present.
Search File Types in the Alpha Anywhere documentation.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.

      Re: Alpha5.alx file

The .alx file should be in the same directory as your other main database files. A file called alpha5.alx on the desktop would suggest that something strange has happened.

        Re: Alpha5.alx file

We recently upgraded from Alpha 11 to Alpha 12. We have not done anything to our Alpha 11 database. We installed the new Alpha 12 and pointed the shadow database to the server location. Today I adjusted 2 field rules and that is when this file showed up. I made the assumption that the procedure was the same.

How can I get this file placed on the server? I am assuming just moving the file will not fix the problem.

I did look on the server and there is an Office.alx file and there is an Office.alb file there as well. Would the alpha5.alx be created if the database rules I was making changes to had a user in that database? I did get a warning message that someone was in that database, but proceeded with the change and hit save. I then marked the database for an update so when the users restart the program they would get that update.

            Re: Alpha5.alx file

Wherever your app is installed must have the .ADB, .Alb, Alm and.Alx files installed together along with the tables and sets files. It's not a good idea to try to save a file that you have been warned is open. File corruption is a possible result. You should make sure that all the files are present and correct by doing a visual examination of the folder contents, then getting all users out and running a database compact, and heed any ensuing warnings.

              Re: Alpha5.alx file

It appears the ALPHA5.ALX files was created when someone else was in the database. I kicked everyone out of the program packed the databases. Moved the ALX file to a different location. Did a test run on the database by opening it. The changes to the rules remained. Deleted the ALPHA5.ALX file and repeated the process. Everything is as it should be.

Thank you all for your help.

                Re: Alpha5.alx file

The field rule changes are stored in the data dictionary files of the table for which the rules were created. That's always in the tablename.ddd, .ddm and .ddx files. If there's a memo field in the table, there will be a tablename.fpt file and the table's indexes are stored in the tablename.cdx file. The .**X files are the index files for the data dictionary.

I have seen these pop up in the past. I have waited 2-3 days and deleted with no adverse affects. Not to say it could cause a proble, but it should be in the Recycle Bin so could be brought back.
