Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    HTML Editor keeps crashing

I cannot develop/change any .a5w pages as Alpha crashes as soon as I type any text into an existing .a5w page in WYSIWYG mode, which is what I always do. The offending dialogue box has the following information:

I have not yet upgraded to the latest version - I am on 5667/5254. But as this 'behaviour' has only just started - and it means that I cannot use Alpha web at present - I'm extremely worried as to what is causing this catastrophe.

Not sure of the problem but you can try to repair Dhtml control (in Alpha install folder DhtmlEd double click it)

Many thanks Kenneth. I tried the repair and the problem persists. I then updated to the latest build and still the same problem. So I've now done a full install and still the same problem. If this is not an Alpha issue I guess my next step is to remove my user name from our domain and then add myself again. After that I'll change my PC.

I'm simply opening an existing .a5w page, typing one letter and the message appears.

You need to contact Alpha on this, Something has changed in the install of AA in Windows from what I see, the AA is not seen as a validated registered windows program any longer - I think what you have revealed is possibly something we don't want to really know, by accident, that is there is may be a problem in the server as far as Microsoft is concerned, as we know the server makes validation call to AA, Microsoft may no longer allow that due to privacy - just saying, no evidence just a feeling.

Thanks very much Peter. I have now left and rejoined the domain and still the same issue. However... having now - a little bit late I guess - had a look at the HTML itself, I find that my text sentences are spaced over many hundreds of lines in the HTML editor. I then went back to older .a5w pages, i.e. older than the last two that wouldn't allow edits, and they don't crash. So I've deleted that two recent pages and I can now edit properly.

So I'm obviously mystified but happy!

My habit is, if I'm creating a similar page, I simply duplicate a prior page and then amend it in WYSIWYG view. Maybe I should be paying more attention to the HTML, but then I'm not sure if the blank lines had anything to do with the problem.

In conclusion, I'll see what happens over the next few days...

(I wish I hadn't deleted the offending pages so quickly; thinking about it, I had probably duplicated conflicting items in the HTML or something like that).
