Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Repeating Section slows dramatically when user enters many rows

    I was just informed by my users that a UX, that's used every day, without issue, slows to a crawl (causing data entry errors) after more than 9 or 10 rows are added to the Repeating Section. The slowdown impacts the data entry and the "save/submit" process.

    Here's some background information that might help:
    • Typically, during data entry, the user will enter only 1-6 items in the Repeating Section (no slowdown or other issues). Because this is a "Customer Quote" form, occasionally, the quotes (e.g. the Repeating Section items) can become quite large (I've seen a couple of quotes with 20-25 lines);
    • The Repeating Section has several fields and is quite complex... That might be part of the problem (see the image below, showing the entries for only 2 Repeating Section records);

    • When submitting the data, the back-end table is a SQL Server table. The SQL Server database is on a VERY fast server, with lots of bandwidth... I don't have any other "speed" issues (at least, none that anyone has told me about). AND... the table that holds that Repeating Section data has only 7,300 records (after 2 1/2 years in production), so it's not a huge table;

    I can't think of any reason why adding 15-20 rows in the Repeating Section would cause such a dramatic slowdown for the user OR any settings that I might be able to adjust in order to prevent this from happening.

    If you have any thoughts or ideas, I'd love to hear them. Perhaps, I'm missing something basic.

    What version of Alpha are you using? Are you using prerender in the UX? If not, have you tried using it?

      Mike- Thanks so much for responding. I really appreciate it.
      • Alpha Version: Though I hadn't updated to this weekend's release, I'm always using the latest version of Alpha (many times, I even update to some of the Pre-Release versions). My current Production version is 12.4.6.0 2 Build 5943-5324. Hope that helps.

      • Second. Yes, I'm using the pre-render optimization for the UX (see image below). Perhaps, I didn't configure it correctly, but those are the settings I've been using. Remember, the user only has issues when large quotes are created, with many Repeating Section records.

      Let me know if there's something you think I should change and I'll give it a try.

      Thanks again for writing. It's very generous of you to offer your time to help.

        I've not used the repeating control as much because I've found it takes a bit more work to get something that a built-in control already does well for you. Can you replace the repeating control with a gird, list, or viewbox?

          We had the same problem. The solution was to convert the repeating section to a list and in the detail section of the list we moved all the controls that were in the repeating section to allow editing and add/delete capabilities. The resulting UX went from a forty to sixty second load time down to about five seconds. Avoid repeating sections whenever possible and use the more modern and consistently updated list control.
