Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Thoughts on Security

In an earlier thread, I recounted the long, painful road of discovery that led to the solution to a problem that seemed inexplicable.

The end result was that my app, which runs on a company server, what being "thwarted" by the company firewall server.

So my IT folks have told me this: "Ensure your site has the proper safety measures to prevent injection and xss attacks. You no longer have the added layer of protection from even common attacks."

Anyone have thoughts about "hardening" a web app built with Alpha?

    thanks,
    Vincent

    Re: Thoughts on Security

Well i ordered a penetration test into my server, and am receiving their findings today. Anyway, if you run critical applications in your server you *must* provide a good waf protection.
There are many solutions out there, i found out that the most important factor is whether they have servers near yours (i.e at least in same country/state), otherwise the apps will slow down considerably.

      Re: Thoughts on Security

I built an application that holds Personal Information and was subject to rules by NIST and other government entities, plus scrutiny by insurance companies, etc. It took some work to get there. The work on the Alpha side dealt with login, changing passwords, user lockouts. But most of the work was tweaking the SSL to come to an A or A+ rating. The application itself passed witout much modification as I used "arguments" in my sql queries and already had a descent security protocol.

          Hi,
I was wondering Steve if you could elaborate a bit on your comments. I am curious about the login, changing password and lockouts portion. In broad terms, what did you have to do?

          Thanks,

          Mike

            Re: Thoughts on Security

Alpha is pretty secure out of the box once you add the proper security certificate and make sure you use proper password encryption.

And if intrusion testing does find an entry point not caused by a programming error, Alpha will fix it asap if you let them know how to reproduce it.

              Mike,

I think Steve was discussing the settings already in Alpha under "Web Security". You can step through it pretty quickly and it seems self-explanatory to me, but if you have more questions, I can step you through it.

Thanks, Vincent. The things built into Alpha I am already familiar with. I was wondering if there was something else. Also, Steve's comments about the SSL being A or A+ are interesting. What does one have to do to ensure an A or A+ rating with regard to an SSL certificate.

                  To start with go here:

                  https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/

And run the test against your website. It tells you where your security needs some help and gives you a rating.

                    Thank you.
Got an A on that one. Some yellow warnings that I don't understand, need to do a little research.

                    Have a good day.
