Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Developer and Runtime Version error

Hi there, I am new to alpha anywhere, I have installed both the Developer and Runtime version in my Ms Server 2008 but every time I click on the Developer version, it will run the runtime version. I have tried uninstalling the runtime version, yet after I run the alpha5.eve, it still run in runtime mode. Did I miss out anything?

Re: Developer and Runtime Version error

    Hi,
    please check the installtion path.
Runtime version is installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\a5V12 Runtime
The developer version in C:\Program Files (x86)\a5V12

In both installations you will find alpha.exe file to start AlphaAnywhere. Create a link on the desktop for the different versions.

Another: After you install Developer, rename the link adding dev at the end. Oly then install the runtime and again add RT to the name of the shortcut.
alpha overwrites the shortcuts to be the latest install.

I have tried both Cornelius and Dave methods, still the same, I even uninstall the Runtime. The system still display only the Runtime version when I click on the Help\About Alpha Anywhere.

Can you please show us the link in BOTH the developer and runtime shortcuts? When you installed both, did you assign a different path for each to be installed into?

Re: Developer and Runtime Version error

Have you tried including a startup file to use in a shortcut?

              this is my ccu.startup file:

              "h:\ccu\ccu.adb"
              -SPLASH="h:\ccu\fishfriendT.png"
              -ICON="h:\ccu\dogLogo128.ico"
              -MINIMIZE
              -COMMAND=script_play("AppTitle")

              shortcut command line:

              C:\a5V12\alpha5.exe -INCLUDE="H:\CCU\CCU.STARTUP"

Note that the shortcut uses both the correct Alpha.exe and app path.

Your windows explorer is probably set to open .adb files with the wrong alpha.exe file

If the RT has bern removed, it shouldn't fire, except if there is a RT app in the background somewhere.
You might need to remove the RT from the Registry
There are instructions on this Forum if you need to do that.
At least you will know for sure that it's gone.
You could have installed 2 versions of RT instead if one of each.

                  As Ted said:
Remove alpha runtime, and I suggest removing all of alpha completely. Then run ccleaner or the like to clean the registry. Then do as I suggested in my prior answer.

If you install alpha dev, it will create a shortcut for you. If you then install Runtime after that, the shortcut will be overwritten by the runtime. This happens in reverse as well and why I suggested response #4 by renaming the first short cut. I have tested the sequence over and over. Alpha should have(in my opinion) addressed this years ago with their installer.

Starting alpha by using the adb file is NOT the correct way to start alpha. That can result in other problems.

Installing on a server is not what should normally happen either. They should be installed on a local machine. Some experienced developers may install runtime on the server, but in rare cases.
Data/application files would be located on a server and that is normal.

                      No good.
You have to manually change the registry.
Search this forum to find out what to do, and ALWAYS back up the registry.

Ok where do you find the links for similar posts - which is suggested above, for fixing which alpha.exe opens the adb file

I know it is a pain, but if you go to the aa folder in program files and rename alph5.exe to something more appropriate like alphadev.exe and alpha5rt.exe, it could make life a lot easier for you.
Remember, I do not condone using adb files to start alpha. errors can occur

I have been having fun with a reinstall of V11 and V11 RT.
The launch icon created at install gets overwritten, so you launch the wrong one.
Then I had issues where the Dev version would not run properly without an actual RT app present!
If the RT was there, Dev ran fine.

                            So what caused it?

It was testing the installation of a RT app with updates to the registry on the same machine just to prove it would load.

Best to uninstall your installs of dev and rt, clean the registry, restart machine and then reinstall dev first and rename the shortcut and restart again. Then install RT.
