Alpha currently has a 3 yr Desktop & Runtime subscription. Does this mean 3 years of support/upgrades and then
after 3 yrs A5 no longer works, or after 3 yrs no support/upgrades but A5 still works...?

Subscription means all stops
I believe Runtime will still operate since stopping clients that you created an app for would get a very bad taste in your mouth and the clients would never want to do business with you or alpha again. You need to ask alpha to be sure.
Perpetual is usually best since only the upgrades and support goes away.
Most software I buy or deal with is perpetual only! It is worth the 10-20 percent more.
Up to you.
Chances are you won't need the support after a year and since there have been no upgrades to the desktop in several years now, you won't need that either...IMHO
