Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Application changes

    I admit I've been using Alpha for 20 years but my mind lost some info somewhere. If I have a developer version and another person is using a runtime version. And if that person wants a design change and I do one for them. How do I update their application without damaging their data? My data and application files appear to be in the same subdirectory. Reply to [email protected] please.

    My choice would be to export the data from your client's version into zapped tables in the new version.
    This does assume dbfs are being used as opposed to sql, which is why I didn't suggest copying the
    project files.

      Thanks. I think I will,ask the user for a backup, restore it to my computer, make the changes, and then return a new backup. Do,you see anything wrong with this method?

          I make the changes to the app and send all dbf support files or all set files. It is much easier. just do not overwrite the dbf(proper) files

              Jim,
              I am 73 so understand

              In the files of the application, .dbf's holds the data, forms, reports, browses and other are held in the support files
              example
              inventory.dbf holds data
              inventory.ddd = support
              inventory.ddx = support
              inventory.ddm = support
              Sets
              xyz.set, sex, sem are set files and hold forms, reports, browses and other.

              If I change a form based on a dbf, all I need to send the client is the support files and not the dbf dbf

              I then can zip and send by way of https://send.firefox.com/, letting the client have the address to download it.

                Thanks. That clears the picture a lot. So the ADD, ADM, etc files don’t get touched?

                  Re: Application changes

                  The adb, alb,alm,alx files will also change if you add new (or remove) tables, sets or scripts (or edit) to the database.

                  If you set the control panel view to detail, that will show you which files have changed.

                    regarding file types, please let's not forget the ".cdx" files. They contain the Index information.

                    If changes are made to any index, this file needs to be copied, AND the indexes need to be rebuilt.

                      True. If you did not modify the index(es), do not include

                        Re: Application changes

                        Time spent reading the help documentation on the topic:

                        Alpha Anywhere File Types

                        is time well spent. This explains where the various parts of your application are stored.

                        The idea is simple. Keep track of what you change. Learn where those changes are stored.

                        Update the remote application by updating the components in your design that changed.

                          I always build a Change Control table into my apps now.

                          Been supporting some USA clients recently, so if I get by a bus - yes, it will hurt- there is a way of picking up on changes.
