Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Control bar dropdown menu issue

I am trying to use the new controlbar dropdown menu feature in the current release.

I have applied the hotfixes and confirmed the system.AEX timestamp was changed.
I have created a new project with one UX containing a panel card, header and control bar.
I have created a single item in the dropdown menu and have applied a simple alert when the button is clicked.

However....every time I click the dropdown menu button in the control bar I get this:

Unable to get property 'CONTROLBAR_1' of undefined or null reference

I have even uninstalled Alpha and downloaded the full version and reinstalled and applied the hot fixes.

Anyone else having luck with this new feature?

Re: Control bar dropdown menu issue

Thanks Lance. I was able to get it working on a different computer but my main development computer always throws up that error message. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times.....very odd.

I was able to get it to work on my development machine....but I had to turn ON pre-rendering.

Confirmed... pre-rending must be turned on... otherwise the menu will not work.

Excellent new feature... no quality control and testing... again!

Just tried on another existing UX and got the same error as Greg, pre-rendering was already on with that UX, anything I tried throws up the same error!

In that case, try Re-calculate All Controls. Or... turn pre-rendering off... then back on. Alpha is chock full of these little bugs, inconsistencies, and idiosyncracies.

Deleted and rebuilt the menu and all works fine now.

Rebuilding is not a good solution. Fixing these bugs is a good solution. Any kind of testing is an even better solution.

I agree David, but finding the bug in the first place is often a mountain that is hard to climb.

I built a dropdown menu which used saved action javascript for their onclick events, the action javascripts were all tried and trusted and the menu gave me the same error as Greg even with rebuilding. Deleted the menu, rebuilt it and used the same action javascript and hey presto all fine.

Bumping this thread with a new issue. Running Version 6488 and trying to apply a show hide expression to a drop-down menu in a controlbar. I can't get it to work.....no problem with doing this to buttons or other control bar items.

Trying to assign the expression fails every time. The builder wont let me click on the "..." button on the far right and manually typing in the show hide expression does not save. The only solution I have found is to create extra layouts for the controlbar but that is certainly not the most efficient way to utilize the menu option.

                      Anyone else seeing this behavior?
