Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Is this possible and is it complex

    Hi All,
I am thinking of a desktop application I want to try to do,but not being good at this I wonder if it is even worth thinking of. I do need to know if it is possible for an experienced developer to do.

    The application Desktop only
The need is to have application go to National Weather service or open weather map and parse the local weather page for weather data (Current Conditions, (forecast for ) tonight, tomorrow, tomorrow night)

Associate words to recorded voice files (example: tomorrow a chance of rain showers and assign a specific filename) the website has the text tomorrow a chance of rain showers and use say rain showers as a keyword with tomorrow and relate that to the voice file with specific filename. Repeat for each remaining forecast today, tonight, tomorrow night.

Have each forecast use the specific individual filenames to create a wave audio file (today (today-*.wav), tonight (tonight-8.wav), tomorrow (tomorrow-*.wav), tomorrow night (tomorrownight-*.wav)) then take and combine those individual audio files into a single audio file say called forecast.wav.

It's really beyond me, but I am curious if it could be done with alpha anywhere. I realize this is a bit vague and it would take a lot more detail as this is just a fly basic view without drilling down to more specific file naming which is required for all the possible audio files for forecasts. It works out to be about 3,500 individual voice files to cover all possibilities of forecasts for anywhere in the world.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

    Hi Paul,
I haven't dug into this yet, but there is a weather API you should be able to use to get the forecast.
As for the .wav files, is there any reason you wouldn't just use the texttospeech() function.
For example, paste the code below into your interactive window after adjusting the volume on your computer.
    Code:
texttospeech("The forecast tonight, temperatures between zero and 100, winds at less than 50 miles per hour, and a 50 % chance of precipitation")

Re: Is this possible and is it complex

I am looking to have a better quality than text to speech without buying voice licenses each year. I just signed up for openweathermap api. I could take their xml feed and convert to text and run in a text to speech program. Only the expensive voices do a good job especially with wind. I know I can do that, but again the yearly voice license fee.

I didn't know you were still out there. Not sure if I have your direct email still. This might be easier offline on some things. I think this is complicated for me, but until I know if it really would work, I didn't want to waste time hacking away to end up at a dead end.

      Thanks!

I'm around quite a bit. I can always be reached at [email protected].
I suggested texttospeech because it's simple and included with Alpha Anywhere.
I had one or two other speech options but lost the url for them (the speech was
great and I could even choose gender and nationality).

If it was a yearly license probably Ivona, which is one of the expense ones. I haven't found many others that come close to that.
Another way would be to use the AWS text to speech. I don't think for small usage there is a charge. I need to go back and look as I thought about this long ago.

          Thanks!

Rather than trust my aging memory, I decided to just get the info from the horse's mouth : https://aws.amazon.com/polly/pricing/

I wish you brought this up at a time when I'm not knee deep into another project.
I spent more time than I planned on last night playing with one of the weather apis.
I was thrown off by the need to convert kelvin to Fahrenheit, and the screwiness for wind direction.

I am sorry about that. I do the same thing lots of time.
No immediate need and thanks for taking all the time!

Let me know when you have time from other project to talk some on it.
Hopefully you will remember what you learned as I know my mind wouldn't.

Re: Is this possible and is it complex

I can always take time. With this topic, it definitely helps to have someone "into" weather.
I have 3 primary methods for knowing what it's like outside.
                  1. Stick my head out the door.
                  2. A friend or co-worker tells me about the weather.
                  3. "Alexa, what's it like outside"

Dealing with the coding side is something I do for fun and learning.

Re: Is this possible and is it complex

Gregg, you need the UK's weather unit - a piece of string hanging down.
If the string is wet, it's raining or has been raining.
                    If it's rigid, its cold.
If it's horizontal it's windy - shows you which way.
If it's dry and vertical it could be a nice day.

We also have "Mole Men" but that's another story.

You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.
