Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Custom numeric format

    I have used these for years in free form reports, but they do not show up for layout table reports.

    I define a function like this, following a specific naming criteria.
    Code:
    FUNCTION entry_format.num.sigdb AS C (value AS N, width AS N, decimals AS N )
    'Description:Significant decimals only [blank if zero]
    if value = 0
    	entry_format.num.sigdb = ""
    else
    	entry_format.num.sigdb = "" +round(value,decimals)
    end if
    END FUNCTION
    This then is available from the format pick list.
    formats_custom.PNG

    But it is not available to LT reports.

    In a LT report I can paste this into the Display Format field
    if(<value>=0,"","" +round(<value>,2))

    and it works like the code above. But 1) I would like it in the pick list, and 2) I have not been able to do more complex formats that require multiple lines of code.

    Anyone else played with this?

    Bill.

    Re: Custom numeric format

    I don't think you can do what you are after.
    The documentation says;
    "Once you have gone as far as possible with a Quick Report, you'll want to convert it to a Free Form or Layout Table Report. The Open in Report Editor button on the main toolbar does this when the Quick Report Genie is open.
    If you want to preserve the Quick Report for future use in the Genie, first press the Save As button on the main toolbar and either accept the generated name or choose a new name."

    So what you might try is to create the reports you want with different value attributes, save them as LT style under a new name and then have a selection process so that the LT reports can be selected, as in;

    Report 1 - Integers Only
    Report 2 - "$" + 3 decimal places

    etc.

      Hi Ted. Are you replying to a different post? Nothing about quick reports.

        Nope. That is how they recommend you create a Layout Table Report.

        Try this in the Interactive screen. It might help with the formatting codes.
        dim a as n ' any old value
        n = 12.1
        ? n
        = 12.1 ' to prove it's there

        z = format_data(n,"-$",20,2) ' the format code -$ shows pound signs on my machine.
        ?z
        = "

          Re: Custom numeric format

          I don't have a problem creating LT reports, or in formatting the data. My problem is adding my custom format definition to Alpha's drop down list of format choices - so I don't have to manually paste it in each time I use it. I do this successfully for free form reports using the definition I showed above. But that does not add to the drop down list for LT reports.

            Then probably not a feature, Bill.
            The new reports are more web oriented I suspect.
            I looked at adding a dropdown, but failed spectacularly.

              Re: Custom numeric format

              Remember I am not talking about a drop down in my report, but in design mode. So for LT report design, right click a cell, edit cell content, and edit formatting - that drop down. Not creating a new drop down, but adding to Alpha's choices. This is a pretty esoteric thing.

              Bill.

                As I said, I don't think it can be done easily.

                As for standard reports.
                Have you used HotSpots behind Logos and Dates to run processes from an open Report in Preview Mode?
                The HotSpot doesn't print so it doesn't mess up the layout.
                I sometimes use them to open a Form and correct obviously incorrect data.
                A lot of the features available on a Form are available in Report Preview.
                Sorry if you already knew that.
                Just saying.
