Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Open Email Client with Image in Body

    Build 6402 5418

    I am opening the user's email client from a hyperlink in a UX, and populating the to, subject and body of the email.

    Code:
    var _to = 'emailaddress.com';
    var _sub = {dialog.Object}.getValue('Subject');
    var _body = {dialog.Object}.getValue('Body');
    window.location.href="mailto:" + _to + "?Subject=" + _sub + "&body=" + encodeURI(_body);
    In this case the Body control is a text area that is populated with an AJAX callback.

    It works fine when using text.

    I would like to add an image to the Body. The image is stored on Amazon S3.

    I have not been able to figure this out.

    Do you want the image to be a link to s3 (regular img tag) or do you want to embed the image (base64)?

      The link to S3 is fine.

          What you are going to need to do is append to the body html. You need to grab the s3 link (I'm assuming that is stored in a database), wrap it in an img tag, append that to the html, then send it. Sending it that way will allert the user that they need to accept the download of the image for it to be shown in their email client.

            I can append a link to the image. What I need is the image itself to appear in the message body, just like an email signature would contain an image. I don't want the recipient to have to click a link to see the image.

              If you include an image tag it will show - but security will prevent it from showing initially. If you want it to show automatically then it must be base64 encoded. This will dramatically increase the size of the email though. I'm not sure of any other way to do it. Base64 encoding would be added to the HTML ccontent. You can minimize and compress your images as much as possible before encoding, which can help.

                It seems like it should not be that difficult.

                  Converting to base64 and inserting into html content isn't that difficult. There are a lot of examples out there on that (not necessarily related to Alpha Anywhere). The real issue comes down to payload size and how you are sending the emails (from your server or a service) and if it's going to impact your server or application. I agree it would be nice if it was easier! Maybe someone has an easy way to do it - but I've always had to hard code it.

                    Base64 does not look like a good option. From what I have read, some email clients block it, including Outlook.

                      Like everything else, it can be turned on or off. But it is left up to the mail client how they handle things. I think you are best off just including the image links knowing that the recipient will have to accept to view them. It will also help if your images are delivered securely (with https).
