Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Upgrade Quandary

    Hi
I am currently using A5v11, having upgraded from previous versions going back to A4v? many years ago. I only run one application for my business, but it's a very important booking system.

Simple question: will A5v11 applications run under Alpha Anywhere? I don't mind a bit of tweaking but I would hate to rewrite the whole thing!

I'm sure this has been discussed in the forum but I couldn't find the answer and I am an infrequent visitor

Many thanks for any help and I am sure many are also considering this

Jerry, short answer is yes. Long answer is that you may need to do a few tweaks due to changes in functions or other. You may find some bugs were fixed and a few created depending the version you choose.

      Re: Upgrade Quandary

You could try it out first and for free.
Take AS up on the 30 day trial.
You might want to check that the changes between V11and V12 are relevent to your situation.
Lots of stuff added to the Web side.
Not too much to the DT side I suspect.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

Thanks for your help. It's the fact that A5v11 is being 'retired' that is a concern for me. I recall having to upgrade sometime in the past when a new version of Windows meant the Alpha version I was using could no longer compile pdfs, so I think I will go for the desktop version of Alpha Anywhere

          Jerry,

Keep in view with Alpha Anywhere you need a valid subscription to continue to use bother developer & runtime. This could end up being very expensive for very little (or no) gain.

Also, I don't see V11 having compatibility problems with Windows 10 which (according to Microsoft) is what we'll be using for many years to come. Only problem we hit on a regular basis is when the Amyuni drivers used for PDFs and printing are changed during a windows update - we have to delete the Alpha printer and reinstall to go back to the correct version.

            Re: Upgrade Quandary

Actually you only need a valid subscription for AA if you intend to keep up with the updates. And since the desktop has not been updated in recent years, whatever version you have should continue to work.

There acyually have been some updates in v12 over v11. they are scarce and probably nothing that would cause you issues.

                Re: Upgrade Quandary

We stopped upgrading our v12 desktop applications at build #4770. We found there were too many issues regarding the rendering of the forms. We are attempting to re-write our most important application as a browser application (using Alpha's latest release #6488) connected to a Microsoft SQL data base, but we are finding the work is slow-going. The upsizing to the data from DBFs to SQL was straightforward, but converting the forms to UXs has been challenging. I would be willing to forego some of the "responsive design" capabilities in exchange for a development environment that was more like the desktop.

I am trying to do the same only using the existing dbf files. The sets can't be used, but it seems that mapped tables should still work.
