Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Deploying a Web app on local server?

I just ran the Flying Start genie on a small desktop app I have. If I want to run the web project in a browser at work using my local server, what do I have to do so other employees can have access to it?

Do I just put the whole app folder on the server (.dbf files & web files) and then start AA from a shortcut on each desktop?

Or do I have to buy something more from Alpha?

    more questions to follow...
    Robin

Re: Deploying a Web app on local server?

Robin, the short answer is: you need to install and configure the web application server software on you server. You can then use a browser to run your app on your network (intranet). If you want to run your app outside of your network (internet) then you will need to change the configuration of your router. The web files are stored (published) to the a5Webroot (folder). The WEB application file a5_application.a5i file contains the [PathAlias.adb_path] that points to the location of your data files.

      Hi Ron,
So I do have to buy the web application server from Alpha? Because the live preview and working preview do work in my developer version - but I don't have current subscription.

Re: Deploying a Web app on local server?

        Hi Robin,

First, this post is in the version 11 section so there is no current subscription. Either you purchased a copy of the web application server or you did not.
Technically, the developer does have a web application server built in. It's purpose is so the developer can test the web app without deploying it. I believe
it allows for 3-5 simultaneous connections.

You really want the actual WEB application server software so you can install it on your server. The last official build is 3381.
As version 11 is rapidly approaching it's end of life, you may want to explore your options using AA.

That said, I think version 11 will continue to work until MS does an improvement that breaks version 11 or you may not
be able to install version 11 on a new computer.

        Send me a PM.

I probably should have posted in the AA Mobile forum but not much is there about just a web app. And all the videos I found were for v11, whereas for v12 they are all about mobile.

Robin, AA isn't just for mobile, AA does both.

Do you have AA? Did you ever purchase the WEB application Server?

Re: Deploying a Web app on local server?

If you can run AA then you have nodejs integration available. And then you have free webserver available. You can start nodejs webserver using xbasic. There is little learning curve but everything is free and you do not need then any license to pay for webserver. This is also true for the runtime.

Then you have option to run your desktop application using runtime and with the help of proper software (for example tsplus) as a web application. There is a license fee in this kind of setup. If you use xdialog and chrome control then the application can also act like a real web application. And you have also option to install small third party web server and use again xdialog for some tasks if you need real web server.

And then there is option to buy AA server.
